TurboMusic: a Turbografx-16 / PC Engine Soundtrack Website
« on: April 09, 2012, 04:01:22 PM »
UPDATE 1/22/2013:

Go here for all your listening needs: http://archives.tg-16.com/music_database.htm

Well, I've decided to shelve the website for the time being.  I'll bring it back when: 1. I have time to make it the site I originally intended and 2. have also gone through and made all the file names and tags consistent.

While the site may be down, the soundtracks are still available since they are hosted on tg-16.com!

Original Post:

Over the past couple months I've been slowly converting HuCard soundtracks and ripping CD game soundtracks and converting them to MP3.

I'm up to almost 40 OBEY soundtracks and wanted to come up with a way to share them with others.

For the past few evenings I've been tinkering with a quick and dirty wordpress website that will do just that.

http://turbomusic.risemedia.org/

It currently only has about 20 soundtracks up there, due to time and bandwidth, but if there seems to be some interest in this, I'll plan on adding the rest and more as I get them.

To download the zip files, you need to create an account (just a username and a valid email address) which will help me see if anyone is using it. :)

The site is pretty barebones and probably buggy, but please check it out and let me know your thoughts!

Groovy!  Hey Joshua, I saw in the chatbox over there your question about being able to upload music.  I think that's a great idea and think I have a way to set that up. It should just be a matter of assigning the proper permissions to the the account level.  I'll have to do some tinkering with that.

Another thing I want to look into is integrating bittorrent as an alternative link for the soundtracks. I haven't used bittorrent a whole lot, but I bet I can figure out how to set it up.

A note about the soundtracks: All of the chiptunes were ripped from hes files found here: http://www.zophar.net/music/hes.html
The track and album information was ripped right from there as well.  Some of the files are labeled better than others.  A number of the soundtracks are labeled Track 1, Track 2, etc.  While others have more appropriate title names.  Also, some of the chiptunes are a set length (like 3:09) for every track, even though the actual music runs out early.  So some of the soundtracks have a lot of dead air.  I'd like to update the soundtracks at some point so all of the tracks are properly labeled and are the proper length for each track.  And I want to embed an image of the game for the album artwork, which I don't think any of the chiptunes currently have.

But they are all listenable, which is the main thing to me.

The CD soundtracks are better labeled and I think have their album artwork already in place, but I think there's only 1 CD soundtrack available right now due to space.  The 40 soundtracks I have on my hard drive take up nearly 1.5GB, and I could see this project easily taking up much more space, so I've got to figure out a good way to host this stuff without using up all of my personal web space (space I need to develop clients websites :P).

I can host all of this .

However, we should contact Paranoia Dragon so you ROFLMAO (and others) don't re-create all the files that P_D has:
DL game soundtracks, including hucard ost's!

He had a thread with, literally, hundreds of games that were in .mp3 format.

I sent him a PM to see if he still has the raw files and if he'd be willing to upload them to tg-16.com...

NOW, his files might not have the best tags/meta-data, which is where the community here can fix things.

I also feel that there should be

     (1) an .hes archive (for folks who use sound emulation) and
     (2) an .mp3 archive (for folks who use mp3's).

I can host all of this.

The challenge, as I see it:

     (a) I want everything to be high-quality (.mp3 @ ______ kB/s) and accurate (track info/meta data)... high-res scan of cover art is a plus...
     (b) I want everything to be uniform, consistent (formatting)
     (c) So we need to have some general guidelines (for all contributors to follow).

I agree.  High quality all the way.  It is possible for me to host the website at my location and store the files at your location.  Also I should be able to set it up so members of the site can upload/update content.  .hes and .mp3 options would be great.  The mp3s that I've ripped have all been converted from .hes via Winamp to CBR 192k .mp3s, so they're pretty high quality.  With CDs I usually use a program called Exact Audio Copy which allows me to encode them as VBR, which I think technically may be slightly higher quality than CBR 192, but with these tunes, I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference.  Also, once the chiptunes were converted to MP3, they were run through a normalizing utility that brought their volume up (straight out of .hes they sounded pretty quiet, which I'm assuming is to compensate for other in-game sound effects).

Ironically, this all started because I tried to get ahold of Paranoia Dragon around the start of the year when I remembered his amazing list, but never heard back from him, so I decided to venture out on my own to have a resource available 24/7.  If we can use the ones he's already put together, that would be awesome.

Thanks for offering to host the files.  That's way cool. :D

As an aside, I added Batman, Dungeon Explorer, Sapphire, Gate of Thunder and Gradius 2 to the site today. :)

Ah, you tried to get ahold of me???  Crap...did you PM me?  I'm looking thru & don't see any :-k  I did get the one from Esteban.  Yeah, I'm willing to help.  I can't even remember if any of my stuff has tags or whatever, other then the main files being named their propers names.  There are probably the occasional game I have music ripped from that has missing chiptunes or no names at all.  I did the best I could, & ripped them all as high as possible for mp3's, though, I no longer can use that mp3 maker with Windows 7 :P  I have a free mp3 maker, it's decent, but, if anyone has any recomendations for a really good one incase I need it??

Ha!  So that's why it's a 100 meg zip file.  I thought it was kind of odd.

Thanks!

Ok, so I looked at the zip file and compared it to the original .hes file and the .hes file contained all the duplicates as well.  I've updated the zip file at turbomusic so it no longer contains the duplicates.  Thanks for bring it to my attention!

Hey Paranoa,  I don't remember if I PM'd you or not.  It wasn't until recently that I found out in my profile settings I can automatically save every outgoing PM, so before then my records are pretty spotty. It wouldn't surprise me if I just posted in your thread and left it at that though. :D No biggie.  I hope I didn't come across as speaking down about you - that wasn't my intention.  I really appreciate all you've done.

I think between you, me and esteban, we can work out a really cool system to have these hosted all the time and freely available.  I can spend some time in the evenings updating tag info, but it would be great if we could get a couple volunteers as well.

Since yesterday I've had roughy half a dozen people create accounts and about 20 downloads so far, so there appears to be some interest in this.
