Whats up....

My story is sad but true. After aquiring a tg-16 and cd unit and a decent selection of games in my youth it was tossed in the trash by my mom while I was away a couple of years ago. I was totally bummed out for a while. I recently found the unit in my attic with a bunch of controllers but, no games except that super cool caveman named bonk. No cd system card which sucks but I have no cd games now anyway. Its just me and Bonk 1. I can't complain though atleast there is hope. I can't believe how addicting it was playing this thing. Its like crazy..but I'm sure you all know the feeling thats why we are here. I had no idea there was such a dedicated hardcore fanbase. Most of the time when I mentioned it to people they didn't know what I was talking about..I've attempted to get stuff at stores but never on e bay or anything. The only time I've even seen stuff in a store the guy who was there said it wasn't for sale..Anyway long story short.. I am hooked and looking to get back in the game for life. Unfortunately I discovered TZD.com too late. Although they still have some stuff..Has anyone ever bought stuff from this site..They have a system 2.0 card for cheap..Is it too good to be true..Also any advice for getting games?? Is E bay the only answer..Any info would be greatly appreciated..I'm glad the fight to keep the turbo family alive has so many soldiers

Ebay for your TG16&PCE gaming needs i'm afraid.

Prices do very at least for games, some are cheap some are expensive

You have to "under stand things" have change since the, 90's today the TG16&PCE has become a collectors item

I notice you said you need a 2.0 card to play cd games.

There cheap but you could do better.

Send your "TG16 to D-lite" and he can mod it by adding a switch going from U.S to Japan mode

Then just buy a japan 3.0 card or get a, Arcade pro card and you will be set.

With a 3.0 card or a, Arcade Card Pro you can play all the "regular" cd games and the scd ones.

Folks here will totally help you out with any questions you have.

www.tzd.com is totally reliable. it has been in business since 1994 (former employees of TTi bought the existing hardware / software). You'll probably find a lot of the games cheaper on ebay, actually... but if you want mint condition and boxes, tzd is more convenient.

I'd grab system card 2.0 for $15... there are many CD games you can enjoy while you figure out what path you'll take with hardware. Unfortunately, the games you'll probably want the most from tzd are Super CD format.

eBay tip # 1: DO NOT PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM BULLSEYE's VIDEO GAMES. Even if he is the only one who has a game you're dying for.

As Tron pointed out, you can modify your existing console to play PCE HuCards. But you can also purchase a PC-Engine console (i.e. CoreGrafx) for a decent price. D-Lite (mod man) has gotten tons of positive feedback here, so you might check out the hardware he has for sale.

The reason we are mentioning PCE HuCards is because they are the affordable alternative to many of their North American counterparts (i.e. I wanted Dead Moon, but it went for $50 today on ebay, I think I'm just gonna get the PCE version instead). The price of some games is totally insane. Also, there are tons of kool games that were never released over here. Definitely something to think about.

For hardware, I would recommend getting a PC Engine Duo R or PC Engine Duo RX (same thing except RX comes with a six button pad). They will be around a $200, but any kind of Duo (Turbo Duo, PC Engine Duo, PC Engine Duo R/RX) has a BUILT-IN Super System Card 3.0, which means you can play all System Card 2.0 games PLUS the newer 3.0 games, which can be argued as even better. Also since it's a Japanese system, you can play all of the PC Engine HuCards on it and just use your Turbo Grafx 16 to play American HuCards because there is no region lock out on CD games, so you can play Japanese CD games on a USA system and USA CD games on a Japanese system, yay! The reason why I recommend the PCE Duo R/RX series over the Turbo Duo or PCE Duo is because there has been a problem recently known in the Turbo Duo and PCE Duo where there is various types of sound loss because the power supply was too close to the AVs in the systems and this was fixed in the R/RX series. Good luck on your new quest for TG16/PCE games and I am glad you have decided to come back!

I've purchased from TZD a few times, but as most mention the selection is getting a bit slim there. I do most of my purchasing on Ebay these days. I would suggest that you start looking into buying the Japanese imports instead of the North American games. You'll often find that they are better priced, in better condition, and more easy to find. The exceptions, of course, would be any text-heavy games. I tend to try to go for the English titles in those circumstances. I used to buy US releases, but I just found that the Japanese releases are much more viable - to a point at which almost my entire collection consists of Japanese PCE games. Good luck!

Forget the 2.0 card and go straight to the Arcade card PRO, even if you get a Duo later it will still work.

If you do get a duo, stay away from the regular model, get the DUO-R or DUO-RX instead.

Last but not least, as mentioned above GET IT MODDED by D-Lite I met him in person he is one of the best human beings on earth. He really cares about keeping our beloved Turbo/Engine alive. I am completely happy with my Duo-R that he sold me with all the bells and whisles.

Also go through all the previous threads, there are A LOT of great subjects to read about.

And ask questions! Even if it has been answered a million times, no one will flame you here. Everyone is cool.

ebay is your best bet.
on a thread a while back we all listed some of the reliable sellers that we've delt with on there (The Westexit is great). as a rule, i almost never deal with any of the big sellers (500 or more feedback) if they have less than 98% positive. some OK sellers look like they have shitty feedback if they've only made, say, 50 transactions and dropped the ball on one of the first ones.

the list is somewhat out of date and some of the links are broken, but still useful.

TZD is great and fast as hell.

you can always check out your local thrift store scene, but that's usally pretty bleak unless you're looking for a sega genesis with sports titles or mario/duck hunt on the NES.

i'd recommend spending an hour or two checking the online yellow pages for video games stores within 50-75 miles of you and giving them a call. don't bother with the chain outlets, ask the mom and pop ones that only have a couple locations.

so If I get an Arcade pro card I can play Super cd games and Pc Duo games?? Are super cd 1 games only for the turbografx cd attachment and the super cd 2 games are for the pd-duo? I am still kind of confused about that. Like the turbo grafx with a cd attachment and an arcade pro card or super system 3.0 card can play all of the duo games?? Except for japanese ones and thats what the converter switch is for ..right? sorry for being newbie

Your first guess was correct, if you use the arcade card PRO, you can play any CD from original Turbo Grafx CD's up to Arcade CD's.

You do NOT need a converter to play Jap CD games. Only for Hucards do you need a converter or MOD switch.

The Arcade card will only work on Japanese consoles.

You would need to:
1. Get a PCE --> TG-16 HuCard convertor, or
2. Install a region switch on your U.S. console
in order to use the Arcade card (or any Japanese HuCard, for that matter) on a North American console.

This is why some folks have suggested buying a Japanese Duo-R (RX) ... you can play nearly everything on the Duo R. For U.S. HuCards, you just use your old TG-16.

What's your budget like? Your budget is really what we need. Not everyone can plunk down $200+ for a console

Yea for now 200 bucks is not an option. At least not yet. These next few months I'll hopefully be stacking some finances and will be able do something soon. I managed to find an arcade pro card on a japanese site for like 35 dollars. I figured this was a good deal and I can always e bay it if it turns out I don't need it or can't use it. Is that a good deal?? It might be like 40 with shipping. I'll hopefully just get my tg16 modded with the region switch from the www.multimods.com site. For now until I can afford a good deal on a dou-r or duo rx. The multimods site has some sick systems too but I just can't drop that much money on it right now. But I'm also trying to get a supersystem 3.0 card. Before I e bay for games I think I'll hit the streets..Hard. Just go to like everyplace in and around the area that seems like they might have something. I mean this stuff is way inflated in terms of prices for games but I think that the following for it is still somewhat small compared to other systems. So maybe if I am lucky I can get to some spots that haven't already been raided by other NEC searchers. I know it is a battle I should have waged sooner but with a little luck and faith I think It'll be ok. I just gotta regulate my spending so I don't go crazy. Thats why I'm waiting for the duo..The mod stuff should still be under like 150 total (I hope) which will leave some dough for game hunting....anyways thanks for reading lemme know whats up thanks

The Arcade card has a system 3.0 built in already, so you don't need that 3.0 card (unless you arent gonna mod it to accept the Arcade card anytime soon)
