Hihou Densetsu Kurisu no Bouken aka Kris's Adventure
« on: May 10, 2012, 03:34:19 PM »

I just picked this game up for cheap and thought it looked interesting. I started playing it tonight and I have been enjoying it! It's like Ys III meets Rygar with muzak.
It's a platformer with a strict time limit per level with a boss every couple stages. Your character has a weapon that can be upgraded by collecting colored spheres. The enemies are a little cheap but have predictable patterns. The Graphics are nothing special but the stages are quite colorful so it makes for a nice looking game. The anime cutscenes are very colorful and well animated. The music is straight up elevator music but it doesn't get annoying and is very well composed.
It always surprises me at how many PCE games there are that you never here about. There is no Japanese text at all so it's completely playable by anyone with two thumbs.  I would recommend picking this game up if you can get it for $15 or less.
Has anyone else played this? PCEDAI only lists 1 user as clearing this game and it seems like a fun game to try and clear.

I have been really interested in this game since I read Chris Covell's writeup on it (click here if you've not yet seen). I must admit I tried it out on an emulator and couldn't get past the irritating disappearing platforms on stage 2  #-o

The story and atmosphere seems nice so I've been keeping an eye out for it on the cheap. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out the timing of those damn platforms...

People probably don't talk about this game because it has NO in-game screenshots at all on the back cover (like quite a few later PCE games...) and thus many people didn't buy it from cinemas alone.

Yeah, I mentioned the game and a few others by ARC in this post:  http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=10254.0

Its funny you add "with muzak". I think a lot of PCE games on CD could have "with muzak" in their description.

This game is indeed very difficult. I'm not really into platformers so I didn't really try to clear this game. Too hardcore for me.

Yeah  I had a problem with that too until I realized that the platform you stand on doesn't disappear from underneath you while you are standing on it.

I always thought this game was pretty neat.

Awesome, I'm always game for trying a new platformer out. Thanks for the heads up.

Are there any good resources out there for gaijin friendly PCE games? By chance I managed to end up with Galaxy Fraulien and Burai II. Both are just sheer walls of Japanese text.

I actually remember BITD seeing a pic or 2 of this game in EGM, or maybe it was Die Hard Gamefan?

It was advertised with screen shots quite often in ads for mail order stores.

Thanks. :) Most of my walkthroughs on that list are outdated and most likely aren't online at all in their latest form. They have all been updated with ascii art, but I still have several unfinished walkthroughs. I've been planning on putting the latest versions and the partials up on a page on my site, but it's just one more item on my long to-do list.

I first saw your walkthrough for Kabuki Den on Gamefaqs and the ascii art level of detail made my jaw drop.  I think you recently posted an updated version here (as of a few months ago?) and I downloaded that as well.  Really impressive work.  I'd never seen a text faq for a game look that nice.

Back when I was in high school I was really into ansi art.  I probably spent more time using TheDraw than was healthy.  It was the bbs ansi art community that probably led to my going to college for 3d animation and graphic design.  Ascii art is a higher level than ansi imo (because it's stripped down to black and white).  The stuff you've come up with is truly impressive.

I apologize for the tangent. :)  Folks really ought to check out Black Tiger's faqs if they haven't.  They're really cool.
