Raisinbar II... HELLZ YEAH. :)
« on: May 16, 2012, 02:38:57 PM »
Finally conquered this beast... it certainly earns its reputation for being tough as nails. I still have trouble justifying its difficulty level, as it's based on a serious case of imbalance, but despite that, it's totally beatable. Who else has stuck it out long enough to take down this one?

I have, and the game is perfectly balanced.  Whatever you need is always there.

Congrats!  I have never made it to the very end but it's a game that I never get very frustrated with very much, either.  Not sure why as it is indeed tough (and seemingly dreadfully slow in spots).

SuperDeadite, by "imbalance", I'm referring to the severely underpowered pansy-of-a-ship you have to use. I realize that this "against the odds" type gameplay is supposed to bring excitement and a feeling of accomplishment when you finally beat the thing, but I am actually left feeling cheated after finishing it and never once did it actually bring that feeling of intensity that many other games have brought. It seems that the game is ultimately missing "something"... I don't quite know what... because it looks beautiful, it plays well (though a big slow), and the sound is good... but something is lacking, which makes it fall a little flat when it's all said and done. *shrug* Maybe the lack of a decent ending also contributes to the overall feeling I'm left with... Sinistron and Sidearms had the same effect.

I think it's partly that the weapons suck.  Also the charge up for the weapons does shit.  Except maybe the green weapon.  I love the game, but the weapons always seemed really weak.  That's what I thought was lacking.

I beat this game, and I just plain don't like the f*ckin' game.   It was boring and not-exciting.

I am picky with my whoreozontal shooters.

it seems perfectly balanced. It's not like R-Type is unbalanced, and it's similar: If you lose your ship in that and restart with the piss-shooter, you're hosed.

This games music is f*ckin bitchin though.  It's my favorite part.  The graphics are purdy too.

I like Paranoia and Rabio Lepus more.

A lot of people think the weapons are underpowered.  I think it's just a style choice.  We are too used to the idea of being able to blow away everything in sight.  With Rayxanber the idea is that being a single ship you could never blow it all away alone, but instead strategically kill what needs to be killed and carve a path through the onslaught.  The 4th stage is the like the ultimate showcase of this concept.

Overall I really do prefer the first game, as it's longer(8 stages), more variety, and feels more complete, plus doesn't have any slowdown, but 2 is a great follow up except for being trimmed down to only 6 stages.

The game is about as good as it gets except the 2nd half of the 4th level IS unbalanced because those stupid balls are random and they go through the webbing then there is a slowdown at the same time. The weapons are just fine you just need a lot of practice knowing when to use what and what direction t needs to be. The final level is one of the best in shooter history.

The last level ended up being a lot easier than I expected. TBD makes it out to be this vast stretch of memory-intense hardship, but the blocks are actually very easy to predict and virtually always possible to dodge. :) That ship that fires lasers is kind of a pest, and the cloaking ship that appears directly behind you no matter where you are is a brat. The whole level looks bloody cool though. :)

The fourth level is pretty much the only one I had a difficult time with, and largely because of those stupid balls but also because of those worm-things that appear out of nowhere. The best strategy for that level seems to be to hang out in the middle of the screen as much as possible to avoid getting screwed by those damn things.

Yeah, the last level is tough but not as bad as the 4th. I love the last level so much I'll die at the boss on purpose to keep replaying it to see how perfect of runs I can make, sort of like a caravan type of deal.

Yeah that is definitely part of the fun with this game is perfecting each level. It's fun to try and get like 100% clears on each level because you'll be playing the early ones a lot to get practice so you might as well perfect them
