Question about my TGCD
« on: May 23, 2012, 12:40:48 PM »
Every now and then I hear this loud click sound. Notice I said click and not clicking (clicking refers to the noise being constant at one time). The noise I hear is just one click and that's it. Games load/play fine, even for hours on end. Video/Audio is also fine.

Should I be worried?

I know I'll have to eventually replace capacitors and what-not. But is the noise normal? I can capture it and upload to youtube if you guys need more details.

That doesn't sound normal.  Is the click coming from the speakers or from the CD unit?

CD unit. Almost sounds like the laser railing is grinding or something for a split second. I notice it when it's about to load something, albeit a music track or a new scene.

Mine doesn't make that sound.  It could be a gear issue?  I don't know.  TheSteve, BlueBMW, Keith Courage, Chop5, and a bunch of others can surely fix it, though.  :)

Happens somewhat infrequently, but enough to happen during all play sessions. What happens if I continue using it? Any risk in having the gears break during use, besides the game freezing or something? ;p

Check and see if this happens on RPG games. The reason I bring this up is because most RPGs have many audio tracks. Let me know if you hear a grind when skipping the first game loading cinema scene or loading the actual game to start. If this is when you hear the sound then this means the little plastic part on the top of the lens track is skipping for a split moment. This is somewhat normal for a good amount of drives now. Over time this piece starts to wear down a bit. Unfortunately there are no replacements for them anywhere unless you can get yourself a donor drive. I would just keep using the drive the way it is. I have a drive that does what you say and I have been using it for 3 years like this with no issues.

If you hear a click when you first hit run this could be the lens not reading the disc correctly for a split moment. In which case the lens could be wearing out or it could just need a slight adjustment.

It happens during a game, so not at the system menu when you first turn it on. and i've only been playing rpgs on the TGCD as of right now and it happens in Ys 1/2 and Cosmic Fantasy 2 at random spots.

When I hear it, it always scares me, lol even my jvc x'eye doesn't make that noise. So you would think it's the construction of the cd unit or is it wear over time (that makes the noise)

Well it all depends on the exact sound. Like I said if it is a click it is the lens trying to read. If it sounds more like small grinding then it is the plastic piece scooting too fast across the lens track. I doubt it is the gears cause if the gears were bad you would have more problems then just an occasional sound.

I'll have to try to make a video with the sound. Stay tuned!

Ironically, it hasn't made that sound in recent weeks. I haven't played Cosmic Fantasy 2 in a while, but went through the remaining parts of Ys Book 2 and Exile without any incident of the noise.

lol

Here's hopin!
