Little is known that crest of wolf was a straight arcade port to the pc engine :)

The arcade walking animations for the main characters are much more fluid. Still not great, but better.

I haven't played through the arcade, but it's supposed to be a different game, with only similar characters, setting, visuals, etc. Westone did the arcade, I don't know if they handled the PCE version.

It does look and feel like an unfinished CD2 game. Has anyone tried firing it up using a System 2 card?

I hadn't thought to try that before, but I just did.  I'm assuming the message it displayed was something along the lines of "Hey dumbass, try using a System 3.0 card!."  I can't read moon speak, but I could take a picture of it if anyone would like.

Sure the arcades visuals are looking better, but iirc they are quite similar in style and game play.

That still doesn't excuse the PCE from having such crappy player animations.

which makes it halfway awesome :D

Mindless Street of Rage / Final Fight style brawlers on the PCE/Duo are very limited.

> Crest of Wolf/Riot Zone - haven't tried
> Ane-san - its like a FF but with UGLY (and I mean grotesque nasty) punk chicks.  your characters are chosen from ugly punk chicks, and your enemies are punk chicks.  it sucks as a game and the idea is even worse.
> Downtown Nekketsu (River City Ransom) - your best opition.  similar to the NES version but with better music and with speech.  very good game but rare and costly.
> Galaxy Deka - looks amazing, but in actual gameplay like Tats already said, gets boring REAL quick.  not very creative and not fun at all.
> Tenchi o Warau (dynasty wars) - this one is awesome, but you're on horseback all the time a la romance of 3 kingdoms setting.
> Vigilante!!  - dont forget this one.  oldie but still classic and great.

I really hadn't seen enough comparison to the arcade version in the past. It seems like most people who reviewed the Turbo version were unaware there was an arcade version.

Ok, my games arrived, and I played through crest of wolf.  An odd game.  Not unenjoyable, and at least some of the enemies pose a challenge.  I thought it might have been 2 player, because surely the PC engine can handle more sprites than that?  I'm really annoyed that they wasted sprites with punch effects, and if those mice are sprites rather than dynamic tiles, it's a waste.

Overall however, if the PCE can only handle 4 of those nice big sprites on screen, looks like any attempt to remake Final Fight will be doomed to failure.  I played the XBLA version, and there are way too many enemies, even without all the weapons, to make a halfway decent port :(

But what makes this game better, is that I played Golden Axe afterwards.  That game is just broken beyond repair.  The main problem is that you can only target one enemy at a time, meaning when you're attacking one, the other can just walk right through your attacks and nail you.  Couple this with the fact that there's no state of invulnerability = death.  Weird that they spent so long on the intro to end up with this jerky small-sprite low-enemy broken mess.

Possibly the worst PCE game I've played.

arcade Final Fight on the other hand is a quite different caliber tho (sprite wise).

true; I did some calculations on a final fight sprite though; I'm assuming the CoW sprites are similar dimensions (without accurately measuring them) I came out with similar numbers.  In fact, the ideal sprite size would be 32 x 64, which would give 8 sprites onscreen.  I just loaded up a Haggar sprite sheet, and Haggar's regular stance looks to be 3.5 times bigger than that.

So if you did make Final Fight, it would have to be with tiny sprites, which kind of defeats the point.

I will leave that to the pro coders, since the pce prooved itself not for the first time as much more
capable as its pure tech specs would tell/allow.

I have to go back to it again. I remember in more than one occasion that there were at least 4 to 5 enemy sprites on screen at one time, I think it could handle it; and the size of CoW's sprites seem to be just fine.

China Warrior is a good example of sprite sizing that can be done.

hmm coders, devs, artists! could BarkeKnuckles and/or Final Fight be done on the PCE?
