SG issue :(
« on: June 09, 2012, 02:07:35 AM »
Hi.
I just tested a SG on my new plasma screen. The console uses the standard av cable, no mods here. But the only thing i get when starting up, is a blank white screen. No sound. The switch in the back is set on "II". I tried with 10+ games and the result are the same. Funny thing is, when i tried it on my older tv a couple a years ago, it worked flawlessly.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Clean the SGFX huey slot contacts. If possible try it on another TV set. Best would be a CRT one.

Those are Japanese HuCards, right? A white screen will show up if you try to play American TurboChips on a PCE or vice versa.

Thanks. My next move was actually to test it on a CRT. Funny thing is i tried all those HUcards. Bought as junk on SMJ BTW. Its not the first time i purchased something labelled as "junk" and it still was working. So far i have tested the machine with 24 games. None working. But one was different. It started up with a black screen and a lot of static noises. Don't know if it tells you something.

Have you tried flipping the PCE/SGX switch?

Hi again guys.
Now i have had the oppotunity to test the machine on a CRT. Its really weird. Now 3 games of the 10 tested worked perfectly. Crisp graphics and sounds. The remaining games just had a white screen. And just to be sure, i tried the 3 working games again, and guess what.. The games didn't start up. Just a plaino white screen. This really makes me angry. What can be done?
Just forgot.. Yes the switch is set on "II".

Just a wicked thought i got...: could it be the games not working as they should? They are bought as junk on SMJ.

sounds like the cards are just a tad worn or something.  I have a few games that like to be in just so, or they won't load.
On one of the ones that worked, keep inserting it and turning on, and try shifting it about each time (not with the power on, dunno if that might kill the game) until you find the sweet spot.

My Arcade Duo card doesn't like being too far in, and my Cyber Core likes being to the right.

as Tats stated, her slot is dirty.  Clean it, the short time solution is to not fully insert your card.  Fully insert, then pull out a short bit.  Be sure it's still in enough to lock her down properly or she might run and call the cops before you finish.

The machine is ready for a new home if anyone wants it. Pictures can be found in the sales thread.
Thanks.

No not really. Just don't have the time right now to take it apart and fix it. Besides, i have other console related stuff to buy, so if you are looking for a neat little project, here is the chance.

Have you ever played a cartridge-based console before? These are classic symptoms of a dirty system. It has nothing to do with the TV. The SG stopped working because its contacts tarnished over the years you had it in storage. You got three games to briefly work again because the friction from inserting/removing twenty-four hucards multiple times cleaned the contacts somewhat. Find an old cleaning kit with a small system card for cleaning Gameboys or something and give the slot a scrub - no need to take the deck apart. If you don't have a cleaning kit, smear a drop of 90% isopropyl alcohol on your extra copy of Keith Courage and rub that around. Then put another drop on a q-tip and clean all your hucards. Once it works again, keep that SG hucard slot/dust funnel covered with a cloth so it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the update mate.
Have had several cartridge based systems over the years but never one with this issue.
