Monster Pro Wrestling

How many of you guys have sat down with this game and given it a shot? Because I never hear it mentioned even when discussion of obscure PC Engine games comes up and I think it's an amazing and very unique game. It's got great graphics and sound, simple yet engaging gameplay, an awesome theme, and it's not tough for non-Japanese speakers to pick up despite a seemingly large amount of text.

Basically it's a monster wresting simulator/RPG, which may terrible on paper but with the huge, over the top moves and crazy characters it really works. Gameplay starts (in single player mode) by choosing one of four monsters. After some words with your creator, you can distribute some points to your stats and it's time for your first match!

The flow of gameplay works like this: first you choose a move by selecting up and down. They each have Japanese names but they are also indicated by an icon depending on what kind of move it is (hold, magic attack, physical attack, etc). You can add guts points by shifting left or right which seems to add damage. Then you roll a random number within a range of numbers depending on some factors and your opponent does the same. Whoever gets the higher number starts the attack, BUT if it's close and you mash the I button there's a chance to counter their move and damage then instead! (Watch the red and blue meter in the middle and definitely turn off turbo for this). Whoever wins the attack face off pulls off a brutal and flashy attack or power up move. Damage comes off your HP and whoever gets to zero first looses (in an amazing way).

If you manage to win (which takes a combination of luck, strategy, and button mashing skills) you get to take one of your opponent's moves and add points to your stats. Having a lot of HP seems to help, but the other stats are all important! You want to be able to inflict lots of damage, have powerful magic attacks, and speed to counter your opponents. Keep powering up your character to see how far you can go!! The game seems simple but there is definitely some strategy involved, at least as much as a typical console RPG boss fight.

This may or may not sound exciting to you but the visual presentation of the game is just so great. Huge sprites, awesome attacks, plenty of hilarious violence, and tons of very weird but awesome monsters. And the gamelay is actually really fun and unique in my opinion. If you give this game a chance it's hard not to have a good time, especially if you manage to pull off an amazing comeback with your signature move! It's also got a 2-player mode which is a lot of fun too, although you can just play with a friend trading off each match.

If you haven't, give it a shot! Anyone else on here play this one? I'm normally not into wrestling games but this one is a hoot.

I have this and was excited to try it when someone gave me a free loose copy of it. The actual game though is...pretty crude. :)

In some ways its a lot like two other underrated games that are menu driven versions of things that would normally be strictly action based; Dragon Ball Z (PCE) and Initial D (GBA).

DBZ has some action elements, but barely. It helps in some levels if you know the anime because sometimes you can beat a guy down to zero HP and he still won't die until you do the specific plot-driven super move. I'm sure you could still find it with trial and error though. Aside from the brutal load times (not long, but VERY frequent) its incredible. The graphics are amazing, especially the cut scenes. This game makes me sad Bandai didn't make more PCE stuff. Another nice thing is that this game ends where the anime SHOULD have, right after Freeza, instead of just going on and on forever.

Initial D is even more opaque because you sort of have to know both the anime, and Japanese language bullshit slang for driving tactics as well as be able to read the names of the menus...and everything is timed so you only have a few seconds to respond so...that ones a bit tough for gaijin, I have to admit. I beat it though and I've only taken Japanese I. Its more about being a fan of racing and Initial D than being literate. :) Anyway, it has f*cking great graphics some great tactical elements so I really recommend that one to the 5 or 6 people on Earth who would actually be interested in it at this point.

I should check out DBZ on the PCE, it sounds cool! I've played Initial D and a few other similar menu-based "action" games, but I guess what stands out to me in Monster Pro wrestling is the presentation, hilarious moves/violence, the music, and the awesome cast of Japanese and Western monsters! The gameplay is pretty basic but you can have some epic comebacks, and a lot more high paced than most menu-driven games. But I just love the awesome over the top moves and graphics!!

What other games are like that on the PCE I wonder? There was a game like Initial D on HuCard but the title is escaping me at the moment.

DBZ on the PCE is a great game in terms of dragon ball stuff and dragonball story and visuals etc. but I never got into its ubertedious gameplay.

Ah, I hate loading times. Which is why I prefer stuff on HuCard if it's possible.
