Darius arcade cabinets in the US?
« on: July 18, 2012, 07:02:18 PM »
I can't seem to find a whole lot of info on the original Darius arcade game.  Was it released in the US at all?  If so, it must have been hella rare.  I'd love own one someday, but whether or not it was released in the States, its rarity will probably prevent that. -.-

The original was released in the u.s but i haven't seen one in a long time. The arcade cab itself was huge, beside it running on duel monitors like what ninja warriors did.

Triple monitors to be exact.  But they were only 9'' monitors I believe.  There are few out here in Japan still, fun to play with a good set of head phones.

You will probably never get to own one. Even when I was dealing in arcade stuff none of the vendors I knew had seen or even had a Darius on commission since the very early 90s. Sadly most all of these US Darius cabs are destroyed by now since they couldn't be converted. Basically the same fate for Ninja Warriors.

Darius and Darius EX were 3 screens.   Darius 2 exists in both 3 screen and 2 screen versions.

I remember playing it in Moncton, New Brunswick at Crystal Palace when it opened up in the early 90's. Those three screens where mighty impressive.

Damn i thought it was duel but i haven't seen one since the 90's so i forgot.

Darius Burst is two screens...two wide screens. Don't get yourself down, it's a simple mistake :) (since THESE are can be found eVeRyWhErE)

Darius 2 exists in both 3 screen and 2 screen versions.

There you go, easy mistake since there was a 2 screen Darius out in the wild in the 90's.

I just had a thought.  Since Darius cabs are pretty hard to come by, maybe I could custom build my own?

I was originally planning on building an arcade cabinet around an NES & making a "Metroid arcade cabinet."  However, perhaps I could do this instead.  The most obvious issue would be the three-monitor set up...I was thinking maybe I could compensate for this buy using a 50-inch or larger LCD TV & building the cabinet around it.  Not the most cost-efficient option (I could just buy a used computer monitor from a thrift store if I were making a conventional cabinet).

After the screen issue is out of the way, there's also the matter of the artwork.  I'm fairly certain there aren't decent scans of the cabinet artwork for Darius on the interwebs, and even if there were, I'd have to adjust them to fit the custom cabinet.

With the large TV, computer for running MAME, arcade controls, and having artwork printed out, this could easily run over $1000...Is it worth it?  Is it doable?
