Seriously, though, I get so excited when I talk about Valis II / FZ II that I go into a frenzy.

Important: If you have any suggestions for VGM that...
1. has an overall soundtrack similar to Valis II (my favorite VGM in the synth-pop category -- it is very catchy, somewhat somber & moody, not overly saccharin), or
2. catchy synth-pop songs w/ vocals like those featured in Final Zone 2 (I love both English and Japanese varieties), or
3. slightly bland, yet still catchy synth-J-pop like those featured on Kagamai No Kuni No Legend (particularly tracks 3 & 4)
... then I would be eternally grateful

MegaCD suggests are welcomed as well!

Oh, absolutely. Lots of ways to do it, depending on what type of machine you have (PC / Mac) and OS you're using. I don't have the time now, but it's incredibly easy to rip the redbook audio from PCE games.

I can do it for you tonight / tomorrow, though, since I have a bunch of PCE CD's that I want to rip the soundtracks from.

That's the method I use, but some folks might consider it overkill.

My 2 cents: Personally, if I take the time to rip something, I want it to last a few years before I have do re-rip it. Many years ago, I thought it was a good idea to "save space" by ripping minimalist MP3's... well, guess what, I would have been better served by making decent MP3's in the first place, since I've had to re-rip everything since then. Totally wasted labor.

NEC actually put effort ($$$) into the dubbing for Ys Book I & II. It was their flagship CD game after all. There was a computer show on TV back in 1990 that had a segment on Ys Book I & II and CD games (a very new thing at the time). They talked to the guy producing Ys Book I & II and went into some of the details about the dubbing process. No VAs appeared on the show, but the producer did talk about how Ys was their showpiece for the Turbo CD and how NEC spent a good chunk of change to get real actors to do the voiceovers (as compared to the janitors and homeless people they got to dub Last Alert I guess). I used to have that show on videotape somewhere along with a bunch of other Turbo stuff I taped off TV (commercials, appearances on various computer shows, and that late 80s/early 90s videogame variety show that I cannot now remember the name of). I've been looking for that tape forever, along with the promotional video that NEC sent out right before TTi was formed and the Duo came out, but I can't find them. Moved too many damn times in the last ten years and lost them I guess

Noriko Sakai was in a league of her own, but if you're after J-Pop, there were a number of PCE titles starring then-famous idols. Right off the bat, I can think of Noriko Ogawa (No.Ri.Ko, first PCE CD game ever), Tomomi Nishimura (Meikyū no Elfeane), Mami Inoue (Kono Hoshi ni Tatta Hitori no Kimi) and a truckload of long forgotten teenagers in Mitsubachi Gakuen (a curious contest digicomi from which the winner was the aforementioned Mami). I'm probably missing a couple other names, but those that came later were real duds

Yeah, I have the Mami Inoue and Noriko Ogawa stuff, for sure. I might have some of the others (gotta check). Unfortunately, Ms. Sakai's tunes are the catchiest

The graveyard of pop music is quite intriguing... were these songs exclusive to the PCE titles, or were they found elsewhere (i.e. singles, albums)? I'd love to get more of Ms. Sakai's stuff (especially if the same songwriters / producers were involved).

HEY! Wasn't the Mami Inoue CD in French? Was it an educational title? Is the written / spoken French acceptable, or did they butcher the French language?

Those were singles that were used in PCE digital comics at the same time as the launch of the idol's carrier, and usually compiled later into an album along other minor singles.

Inoue Mamie is in Japanese, it's just standard practice for Japanese to use randomly chosen French words in their works (think Sakura Taisen here). The French language must sound as hype to them as Latin does to us

As for the other matter: I thought I remembered hearing a bunch of spoken French audio tracks on the Mami Inoue CD... perhaps it was a different title, but I swear they were speaking French!

I personally think J-Pop is retarded but damn I have been wanting to play that No Ri Ko game for awhile just to see what it's like! I can't get enough of games that have digital pictures in them, especially for the Turbo.

Thanks for the link. I have a fondness for 80's style music, that's why I like the PCE soundtracks with the "dated" sound... so I, too, want "good old cheesy J-Pop" as well

I have "The Manhole", but the audio in that game is pretty lo-fidelity, and I recall listening to a PCE game with good quality spoken French (and spoken by a woman!). Looks like I'll have to open a few boxes in the garage and start rummaging... perhaps it was one of the installments of Ultra Box (I don't think so)?
