Have TG-16 and CD, keep or get Duo?
« on: July 29, 2012, 06:05:27 PM »
Other than System 3.0 support and smaller console size, is there any benefit of getting a Duo? Or should I keep my TG-16 system?  I am the original owner of the CD system when Toys R Us clearance sale'd them at $99 each years ago, I probably still have the original box somewhere.  Looking on eBay, I think a boxed CD system would more than pay for a couple working Duo's

I did consider Turbo Expresss but the tiny screen is a turn off since I like RPG. I might be better off with Ben Heck style hack adding a 5" LCD panel to a TG-16 console with Turbo Booster Plus for memory saves.

PS anyone still use the CD as a stand alone CD player?  Seems kinda silly now day since you can get a $10 CD player that uses battery, much thinner, lighter, and won't make you cry if it fizzles due to old caps.

Keep it. If I were in your position, I definitely would keep it. Though I might get a DUO as well. Ofcourse then again I have 3 Sega Genesis consoles, 2 Sega CDs, and 2 Sega 32X, and I think 4 PS1s. I actually have 2 Sega Saturns too but one is damaged. So anyway, I'm not exactly against having backup consoles. Given your history with the system, being the original owner, I really would advise against selling it unless you are getting out of the TurboGrafx entirely.

While, there is nothing wrong with selling your Turbo CD for a Duo, factor in the nostalgia you have for that console. It may seem silly, but people go through regret down the road when they see an old ad or discussion on the Turbo CD and then "I wish I had not sold mine". Sure, you could just re-buy it, but you have it now. Try saving up for the Duo. It'll be like a short-term goal and may be more rewarding in the end.

Whatever you do with your CD system (I'd keep it) you need something with System 3.0. Seriously.

1) Buy a PCE 3.0 card and Chopsado adapter for dirt cheap.
2) Expand your library a little bit and test the Super-CD waters.
3) Make an informed decision on your long-term hardware needs.

For a little more money you could region-mod your TG16 instead of using a Chopsado.

Right now you have one of the cooler and more expensive setups. Add-on consoles are a rather attractive relic these days. Yes, if it's boxed, you could sell it and use the money to buy a cheap PCE Duo, a region mod, and still have a couple hundred left for games, but I don't see the sense in selling your childhood console unless you're seriously broke. At any rate, don't make any drastic hardware changes or investments before playing some SCD games.

So keep the CD system then. Who knows, maybe in 20 years it'd be worth enough to send someone to Havard.

Hmmm System 3,0 card for PCE on eBay for under $20 but USA version for TG-16 is more than an used Duo?  Looks like PCE 3.0 and a chopsado to try out a few SCD's.

I have an eye on Y's 4 (english hack, if my CD-R attempt doesn't fail) but what other SCD is a must-get for one who likes RPG mostly and doesn't do Japanese well?

Those arent SCDs (maybe Exile is, I'm not sure). But Ys Book 1 & 2 and Cosmic Fantasy 2 will work with a system 2.0 card.

For SCDs check out Dragon Slayer, Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder... and if you have some extra cash look into Castlevania X and Dungeon Explorer 2

These are just a small sample, and the CD drive isnt region modded so you can play the jap SCDs, of which there are tons more than US ones
Original owner of a TG-16 since 1989!

Keep it.  This is coming from someone that sold his TG-16 and just recently bought it back.  The stores that bought used video games and consoles back then didn't really offer you much.  Heck, the offers were even lower than EB Games.  Anyway, I sold all of it just to buy the next big thing.  Looking back at it now, I wish I had never sold any of it.  I didn't have a lot at the time, but if I had kept it there would be no way I would even think of selling it now.  My relationship with my TG-16 would be going on 30 years and that's a longer relationship than I've had with any girlfriend, car, or wife.  Don't sell it, you'll regret it.

Coming from me, I just bought a TG-16 and CD.  I'm happy, but I want a Duo (Duo-R) too.  I'd really like to have both.
I'm busy playing pinball, but I still drop by to visit.

Dragon Slayer is the only traditional SCD jRPG released in the U.S. that's still affordable these days. It's not spectacular, but it's solid. Start with that and one of the Thunder games. Gate of Thunder and/or Lords of Thunder is really the rite of passage into SCD gaming, even if you're not a shooter guy.

Other affordable RPG-ish SCD's: Dungeon Master (western RPG/puzzler), Shape Shifter (Legendary Axe with RPG elements), and Dynastic Hero (the PCE version is English-friendly and available for $10. Follow along in the Genesis or SMS version if you get stuck).

You have to keep it, do not sell it. Best thing to do is just save up for a DUO. I have the same system TG16-CD with the US version System Card 3.0. It is my original system and love it. Do not get rid of it. You will probably regret it later.
