model boat
« on: July 30, 2012, 06:11:45 PM »
I thought i would share with you guys the model boat i have been making for my mother. It's small and may not look like munch, but its all hand made. The hull of the boat started out as half a pecan shell. the metal railings are the legs of a resistor. it has an actuall wood deck made of toothpicks laid side by side. The cabin alone is made from 20 individual pieces of wood. Once again sorry for the camera, its crappy. I retook this picture 7 times in different places and the camera just can't handle up close shots. As you can see the sails are not done yet. I have yet to figure out what i'm gonna make them out of.

appreciate it. I dont really have the right tools either. just what i have made so far as taken me weeks. every step of the project has been trying to work out the best way to add something without screwing it up. Next step is i'm gonna have my oldest daughter use three strands of her hair to braid rope for the sails. Thought her grandmother would think thats pretty cool, adds a real personal touch.

I love when human hair can be incorporated into a craft project .

Yes she does. The whole boat is maybe 2" long 2 1/2" tall and 3/4" wide. everything is so small it has taken alot of time. Its so small i have to be careful how much detail i put into it, or it will just look cluttered. So far i have used the following material:
half a pecan shell (main hull)
flat wooden toothpics (for main deck, cabin, and creating the bow and the stern)
wood putty (for creating final hull shape, and filler for inside cabin to make stronger)
wooden q-tips (for masts)
metal legs from 220ohm resistor (metal railing on bow of ship)\
sand paper
acrylic paint
polyurethane
tweezers
exacto knife
