Question Regarding Console Remake
« on: January 07, 2006, 10:54:29 AM »
So I was thinking...

You guys have surely heard of the Generation NEX Messiah (www.playmessiah.com), which is a new model NES/Famicom system.  There are others out there as well, but the Messiah is the most well known of the bunch.

What are the odds of, in the coming years, someone making a new model NEC-based console that plays all formats of Turbo/PCE games?  How bad ass would that be?  I'm sure it would be more successful in Japan than here in the US, but it still would be sweet.  I mean, imagine it: a new console that played All CD formats  (CD, SCD, ACD) and both JPN and US games.

Not only that, but imagine if it had a multitap built in for 5 player gaming.  Eh?

So...?

If there are any enterprising/electronically adept folks on these boards, I'd be more than happy to discuss a business venture.
Games I Need: Bonk 3 (HuCard), Legend of Hero Tonma, Magical Chase, Soldier Blade, Super Air Zonk.

Got one to sell? PM me!

The only problem I see is that in Japan there is no shortage of the original consoles and they can already play almost every game there is (except a few US Hucard games). Kind of like the NES here except that the NEC consoles tend to still work. As for the USA, I don't think there are enough of us here who would buy such a thing. Having said all that, I think it would be nice, especially if they could make it look as much like the original PC Engine as possible. In my mind, I picture the original PC Engine with a small front loading cd drive underneath. Oooooh that's sweet.   :D

My plan was to take a SuperGrafx machine, couple it with the CDROM base and the arcade card pro, and install a much faster CDROM unit. I would call it the "TurboTrio". :D However, having the Tap enabled fulltime screws up a few games (such as China Warrior) so I left that idea in the scrap-heap. :)

Actually, I did contact the rep manager for Messiah a few months ago.  He said that if there was enough people that wanted it, that they would do a turbo duo remake.  Aaron was supposed to promote this heavily here and I had given Aaron the manager's name and phone number to promote this.  However, I have tried to pm Aaron SERVERAL times and he never ever responded to my email.  The only reason I didn't say anything is because he had said to hold off so he can promote this in a "Special" way.

Oh man, maybe we should beg for that.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

PC-Engine Converter instead?
« Reply #6 on: January 08, 2006, 08:34:17 PM »
Hey Mothergunner,

When you talked to the Messiah rep, did you ask them about making a  PC-Engine Converter? That would be less of an investment and there might be more people interested in this alternative. I'm planning to do the internal mod myself, but I'd rather leave my system virgin plus if possible. Plus it's gonna be a pint in the @ss.  I know TZD has a converter, but that just seems way to much for what it is. This thing should only cost around $20-ish buck-a-roos. Well, maybe just wishfull thinking...

Would anyone else want something like this if it cost effective?

I don't care if it would cost $1000, I'd give anything for more PCE/Turbo hardware, especially if its technologically superior.

I can't wait until 20 years from now when these things will be 10 at a time for a dime and have upscale converters and wireless HD video out.

By then, most retro consoles will probably all come together in the same unit and will be sold like the novelty joystick arcades are now.

Actually no, never thought of a converter request, I got my Duo-R from D-lite already modded and Im very happy with it.  I had thought of a converter but it just adds extra bulk to the system and IMO makes it look awkward.

The idea of new hardware is of course region free, so you can play anything.

Get it modded, trust me, you won't regret it.

think that NES console is come about due to the NOC(NES_on_chip) thingy.
unless we have someone/company come up with PCE_on_chip don't think we will see the day...

Yea, I already tried e-mailing D-lite a week  ago. He never responded. Maybe I'll try again. I found the how-to online, but Im not sure I'll have the time. It looks like a fun challenge. I just don't want to mess up though!

Sorry for not jumping on this as quickly as you'd like - if we do this, we need to do it right as we probably will only have one chance.  I was about to launch a marketing campaign for a remake of the TurboDuo shortly after Messiah launched the NES remake, but they fell into some legal issues and thus I have delayed trying to get support till I know they are able to make a remake of the TurboDuo a reality (legally).

Incidentally, I got one of those Generation NEX console last week and it's really, really well done.  I've heard some complaints about it, but I don't have any.  Good stuff.

And as far as a NEC console remake goes, one that plays SuperGrafx games in addition to the PC Engine, Turbografx, CD, Super CD, and Arcade CD games would be awesome.  Basically your one-stop NEC shop.
Games I Need: Bonk 3 (HuCard), Legend of Hero Tonma, Magical Chase, Soldier Blade, Super Air Zonk.
