PC Engine Setups
« on: August 09, 2012, 06:04:19 AM »
Please forgive me if there's a thread on this already, but I'm always curious of member's current PC Engine setups. I'd love to see how you're playing your consoles and what Televisions/Monitors you're using.

Currently right now I've got the Duo R running on a Samsung GXTV. It's been a great gaming TV for the older systems.

Duo R Playing and Audio CD (New Order Live at the BBC).

Gaming setup (Minus the Capcom Mini Cute) Duo R @ 0:40.

Nice room you have there. My setup isn't terribly fancy since I don't have alot of room. I have a 32" Samsung LCD TV for my modern consoles, 360 and PS3. Some random sound system that wasn't terribly expensive to go with that. Then I have the far more important 19" Sony PVM monitor which accepts Composite and RGB video. I really wish it accepted S-Video! Mainly for the N64 and GameCube. Maybe I need to get a S-Video to RGB decoder and use the second RGB input for that. Anyway, I have connected the BNC RGB input to a BNC to VGA cable that connects to a box with a Euro SCART connector. Through SCART cables I run most of my older consoles. The older consoles I have out right now are:

Composite Video:
Nintendo 64
GameCube
NES

RGB Video:
SNES
Sega Genesis + Sega CD
PC-Engine DUO-R
Sega Saturn
Playstation 2
PSOne
NeoGeo MVS

Having a good CRT for your retro gaming is critical. If you don't, you'd better hope you have a HDTV that actually does a good job with them as most are crap. The real deal is way better than emulation. I have most of my bases covered for old school gaming. No Atari though.

My room is a mess as I've taken some consoles out. I need to replace power strips (4! dumb fat AC adapters hogging 2 slots) with something a bit neater, do S-Video mod on 2600, TG-16, X'Eye (for genesis and SMS games), Genesis+32X (for 32x games only), and get S-Video cable for SNES, N64, GC, Wii, PSX, PS2, and build a 12 port S-Video switch box (4p12t rotary switch are cheap on eBay), and curse at Nintendo for making NES not S-Video capable without very expensive and very hard to find RGB chip from arcade machine.

My LCD TV is a weird one, it has 2 composite and 1 S-Video input. I could switch to either composite 1 or 2 but if I plug (yeah just plug) into S-Video, composite becomes unavailable.  Asinine design to lose 2 composite ports for ONE S-Video port.

The N64 is actually not too difficult to RGB mod, especially if you can convince beemer to sell you a video amp.  There's also a guy on neo-geo.com who sells pre-modded N64s for like $80 or so (bare console.)

And I agree totally with your comment about a good CRT bring the heart of a classic gaming setup.  I have a Sony BVM-20F1U RGB monitor as my "main" display (I don't remember the size, but around 19,") but without adding some spendy expansion packs to it, it accepts nothing but RGB (and component, but that does nothing for me.)  I also have a smaller 13" Sony PVM that accepts RGB, composite, and s-video.  I primarily use this one with my NES in the RGB inputs, and my Atari 2600 in the s-video input.

My PC Engine is a Duo-R that I bought from doujindance on eBay.  New laser, region switch, and RGB mod.  It's the only NEC console I have, and the only one I need unless I want to give the SuperGrafx a go.  This system is usually the one plugged into the BVM, but I also play Genesis, SNES, PSX, Saturn, and a little bit of Dreamcast on it.  At some point I'd like to buy an RGB-modded 3DO from doujindance, but we'll see.

I actually just moved into a new house, so when I get my game room or whatever finished, I'll snap a few pics.

I purchased one of these tvs when they came out back in 98 or early 99, and after 2 months the subwoofer died. It took them a month to replace the Tv. Instead of fixing it they sent me back a new one, which I then just traded, did not bother to open the box or anything. I thought the tv picture quality was decent and all, but it seems like I remember it had no svideo input and the image was unnaturally dark so I could never get it exactly the way I wanted it to look.

Duo R Playing and Audio CD (New Order Live at the BBC).

Great song, was used on the soundtrack for Bronson.

I went for the 'ol briefcase setup:

Also have an SGX but I can't be bothered taking a photo of it.

I do kind of want a Duo but I can't justify the expense when I already have a working Hu/CD setup.

I have 2 differents setups in my house (i'm lucky enough to have a 3300 sqft house).

first one for modern gaming (~2000) in the basement home theater room:

LG 50" Plasma
7.1 Home Theater with enough power to shake the house.
XBOX 360
Wii
PS2
PS1
Dreamcast

Old School in my office (had enough spare room to fit a sofa, a x-rocker chair and a small tv stand):
14 inch tv with build in DVD and stereo (looking for a decent 32 inch LCD or DEL screen to replace it).
TG16
PC-Engine Duo (modded)
Sega CD/Genesis
Sega Saturn
NES
SNES

I'm still working on mine.  My second avenue pad 6 showed up recently.  This morning I ordered a confirmed working briefcase cdrom and interface unit.  I also ordered the pce super cd card 3.0 this morning.  I've already got the turbo everdrive and built a cheap cover for it.  Pictures coming when the rest of my hardware shows up.

Games and system setup on the "NEC side" of my gameroom. TV is a 40in Samsung LCD, and all systems are setup with composite cables. Top shelf houses a PC-FX, middle shelf is a TG16 with CD attachment (left), and a PC Engine Duo (right). Bottom shelf houses a pair of wicker baskets that store my extra controllers/cables/multi taps
Original owner of a TG-16 since 1989!

CURRENTLY PLAYING:
Vita - Conception 2
PS3 - Tales of Graces f
Wii U - Monster Hunter 3 Ulltimate

Composite and S-vid run to the KV-35v35 (2600, Genny, Duo, SS, PS2, GC, LD and computer). The KV-30HS420 has the HD stuff only (360, OTA DTV and a 2nd PS2). Sound runs on an older 100w JVC RX-505v to some refurbed 2-way floor standing speakers.
