Figured I'd give Vigilante a run through on it a little while ago. Played Vasteel for a hr last nite, and spent some time today playing Flash Hiders and Ninja Spirit too.

I like the Mr. Heli ad in the background.  I've never beaten Vigilante, though I don't think I gave it a very fair shot before selling it many years ago.  Now I want to pick it up again. :)

It's a fighting game. A version was also made for Super Famicom. There is a comparison in the PCE/MD/SFC screen shot thread.

I've been playing it since I was a kid when it was released in arcades. Even after a few years of not playing it I can jump in and just clear the game on a credit or two. You have to be persistent and just mow through people. Only stop at the doorways where enemies come out, when they have a gun, or at the last second when a enemy approaches from behind. Rule of thumb for attacking anyone with a weapon is unless its a hand gun jump kick them. Hand gun guys are easier to kill just by walking up and attacking them.

Flash Hiders...  what genre of game is that?
Fighter. If you like stuff like Galaxy Fight it might be up your ally. Its pretty solid.

I have always loved Vasteel. Right now I am playing a Japanese copy, but back in 94 through 96 I spent a ton of hours playing the Working Designs release. Its definitely one of Humans better games, and its import friendly for those that cant suffer heavy Japanese text laden games. Its a rewarding game to those who stick with it, especially when you see some of the active battlefield visuals.

WELCOME BACK, PROFESSOR.

MISSIVE FOR THE IGNORANT (the Professor need not read this, for he already knows the Truth):
Vigilante is a short, easy game. It is also the game that made me realize that one should NOT use autofire in many games. Autofire detracts from the challenge, skill and satisfaction. Vigilante allows you to attack (swing nunchaku) at varying rhythms. It's subtle, but this little nuance makes the game INFINITELY more enjoyable for me. My "Just Say No to TurboSwitches" approach has helped me better appreciate a bunch of games.

THANK YOU VIGILANTE. YOU ARE MORE THAN YOU APPEAR TO BE. YOU ARE MY MENTOR.

MY SAVIOR.

/missive

Anyway, welcome back, Professor.

I hope you are not offended that I took this opportunity to preach the gospel of non-assisted button-pressing. Vigilante is just one of those games.

Oh I agree. I'm sure that there are many who think they ace Vigilante because they use auto fire, only to go play the arcade game via mame or a cab and find they get their ass kicked for lack of that feature. What I have always loved about Vigilante of TG/PCE is how solid a port it is. In general in fact, if you compare how accurate arcade ports on the likes of Genesis are compared to how they were on Necs hardware, Nec wins hands down because it retains the look and feel in most cases, regardless of using Hu-Card or Cd.

The Genesis does have some shining examples like Two Crude Dudes, Wrestlewar, Gain Ground, Strider, Hellfire and other Toaplan titles, and The Punisher, but over all its count doesn't stack up as high as Nec does with its long list of classic arcade titles by Irem, Taito, Capcom, Data East, SNK, Konami, etc that were ported over. In fact Konami was on a great streak up until they botched the Martial Champion port. And when I say botched, it is only because it was too ambitious a project for Super Cd, and it should have used the arcade card. Because they did not do so they had to cut some animation and sprite size was cut down pretty drastically (arcade characters sprite size was on par with Art of Fighting). Compared to what they cut though, they still retained a ton in the port so its not "terrible".

Absolutely.

I know folks have compared the sprites/graphics of Strider arcade vs. Strider Genesis...and I feel that the spirit of the arcade game is captured by the Genesis port. Some ports miss this aspect of a game (the authenticity of spirit) and leave us with technical authenticity that somehow remains sterile.

Anyway, I love Konami's port of Gradius II for PCE. Very challenging (for me), but it felt great to beat the bastard.

I know you love your vs. fighting games (see? I don't even know the proper name of the genre), but Martial Champion, sadly will get as much play as the other fighters on every console I own (which is to say, NONE).

OK, I lied: I have actually played Strip Fighter II (emulator) years ago.
