So many options - recommendations welcome!!
« on: January 20, 2006, 05:29:58 AM »
Hey, I realize that these are different genres, but what order would you purchase these games in?  Recently picked up a Supergrafx/cd-rom rom.  I only own ghouls and ghosts as of now.

Here are the games I'm interested in;

Lords of Thunder/Winds of Thunder
PC Denjin (CD/hucard)
Pop N' Magic
Star Parodier

I'm looking to pick up games for $30 and under for now, but if you know any need to buy games, give me a heads up.
What a horrible night to have a curse...

Well for $30 you can buy a Lords of Thunder at Turbo Zone Direct. The people at TZD are friendly and they only sell new/unopened tg16 stuff.

I haven't played PC Denjin or Pop N' Magic, but have played the other two on your list. Star Parodier is a colorful shooter and its intro is more entertaining than Lords of Thunder. My favorite stage is where you fight the level 4 boss of Super Star Soldier, and also the Bomberman stage.

Still you can't go wrong with Lords of Thunder. It's a classic shooter and that should be in everyones turbo library. Amazing graphics, gigantic bosses, and the challenge should keep you occupied for several weeks. Where as Star Parodier can be beaten in a day or two.

If price wasn't a factor, I'd rank them in this order-

Lords'
Star Parodier
PC Denjin/Air Zonk
Pop N Magic

Since Lords is cheapest anyway, I say go go get it.

I'd also suggest buying the HuCard Zonk/Denjin. The CD game is actually a sequel which at the very least isn't as good(as the original) and depending who you ask, not very good.

If you're a Capcom fan(as well as a shooter fan), I suggest also buying Forgotten Worlds. Its as cheap as Lords and is an amazing port.

One must-own for sure is Gate Of Thunder. Its worth it, whatever the price or region. But you should hold out for the 4-In-One/U.S. version since it has the extra games on it.

Thanks!  Gate of thunder looks sick, I can't really say that I'm a shooter fan, but I'm looking to get into it.  NEC seems to specialize in the genre.  I'm fairly new to the console, but owned a tg16 as a kid.  I def want to get a mint copy of drac X, and some of the more expensive collectors games, but I really have to learn how to budget.  I have been buying video games like crazy.

By the way is that a bonk tattoo you've got there?

Yeah, thats a real Bonk tattoo. The photo was taken before it healed, but it looks at least as good now.

I just thought that you were looking for shooters because of your list.

I could list a pile of super-cheap but ultra-amazing Turbo Hu Card games to buy, but I guess you can't play them.

Some other cheap(many are based on my Turbo-price based knowledge, PCE may cost more) but great games-

Shooter:

R-Type I & II -Hu
Aero Blasters -Hu
Dead Moon -Hu
Side Arms -Hu
Side Arms Special -CD
Forgotten Worlds -CD

Action/Arcadey:

Ninja Spirit -Hu
Bikurriman World (Wonderboy II/MW) -Hu
Monster Lair (Wonderboy III Arcade) -CD
Makyo Densetsu (Legendary Axe) -Hu
Bloody Wolf -Hu

Adventure:

Adventure Island (WonderboyIII/MWII) -Hu
Dynastic Hero (Wonderboy IV/MWIII) -CD
Dungeon Explorer -Hu
Neutopia -Hu

Platformer:

PC Genjins' -Hu

RPG:

Ys I & II -CD
Ys III -CD
Tengai Makyou II -CD
Tengai Makyou Fuun Kabuki Den -CD
Neo Metal Fantasy -CD

Pinball:

Alien Crush -Hu

Misc:

Bomberman' -Hu

If you can afford it($35'ish) and either have any interest in Adventurey/Zelda-y(turbo charged Ys) or just want a show-piece game, you should pick up Kaze No Densetsu/Legend Of Xanadu II. Its got some of the nicest graphics & art around(its the Final Fantasy III/IV of PCE).

awesome...

I do have a turbo grafx along with the supergrafx and cdrom2.  Thanks for the recs.  Right now I have ghouls and ghosts for the sg and bonk's revenge, super adventure island and splatterhouse for the tg16.  I have a cd-r of drac X, but the music tracks would stop playing randomly the couple times I tried it.

The next step is to pick up a cd game to make sure its not the system (I hope).  The supergrafx and cdrom2 cost me over $250.

Lords of thunder seems like a good start, but the legend of xanadu II sounds good if you recommend it.  Zelda is def more my style.

Yeah, like a lot of other Turbo/PCE CD games, Lords is worth buying for the soundtrack alone.

Welcome to the Higher Energy video gaming, cavein2000 :D .

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Yeah! And Black_Tiger knows his stuff, so you can't go wrong with his suggestions. If there are particular genres you like, or particular games you like, you can ask us for titles that might fit your tastes :).

If you buy a Bonk game, I recomend picking up Revenge first, since its the best(in my opinion), but Adventure is really fun.

Bonk 3 isn't as polished(as Revenge) or fun(as Adventure) overall, but it has some cool giant sprites.
