Hmmm let's see we got the 56K in the later 90's, my parents couldn't understand what one would do with the internet up that point.  We used e-mail mainly, I think I wondered into a few AOL chatrooms the few times i got to use it unsupervised, But mostly in my house we used it as an ecyclopedia, when one could not find the answer it was best to "ask the internet".  by the time I was middle school, just a few years later, higher speed net was all but here, and we had access normally in school.  The internet for me became just part of life.

Actual WWW, like pictures and sounds and resources that started out with http://www....? Probably late 94 or early 95. I did plenty of time on BBSs though, mainly to warez Amiga games.

Interesting thread.  I was really into BBSing before the internet caught on.  I think we got our first modem in '90 or '91.  Before that I used a terminal at the high school library to join chatrooms.  I started my first BBS in '91 or '92 (Used TriBBS then switched to Renegade).  That ran until I moved from Hawaii in late '93.  I started up another one in RI using WWIV, but it didn't last too long. (aside: I remember going all out and buying a 486 DX2/66 for the RI BBS.  It was a smoking fast machine at the time!) 

When I lived in HI and ran the BBS, I helped start a network of BBSs which eventually linked up with a BBS on the mainland.  We then connected to FIDO and could send emails and join in forums all over the world.  We even got the local radio station, Radio Free Hawaii, on our network and listeners could fill out a form online to request music.  It was glorious. 

Then the internet happened and all that disappeared.

My family first got Prodigy right around 1990.  I used to love playing Carmen Sandiego on the service when I was a kid.

Then my family moved to the middle of nowhere and the phone lines were so bad, no internet from 1992-1997.  Finally, we returned to civilization and got on AOL in 1997.

I think it was 1998. It was at the local library where my mom worked. I went to Nintendo's website and Game Sages. It was awesome. I barely knew how to use it, but it was awesome.

They seriously needed to defrag their hard drive, though. It was slow as molasses.

I didn't get it at home until June 2000... on my Dreamcast! My parents didn't want to buy a PC. We eventually got one around October of that year. I lucked out and got it right before a long 5 day weekend because of a teacher convention or something. Once again, I didn't really know what I was doing, but I set it up without any help.

Am I the only one who looked up Dragon Quest 5 and 6 the first time being online? The second thing was ordering stuff from tzd in 95ish, possibly later. Oh yeah and going to www.zophar.net and making myself a nuisance at the dump which used to be hosted at classicgaming before it finally shut down.

Ahhh my creaky old memory isn't what they used to be.

The first time I was online (not internet) was with C64 and a 300 bps modem.  Chat room, a couple games, and such.  I used ArborNet that day.

The first time I had internet access was when AOL offered flat rate. I tried AOL, found internet, I think I was looking for Thundercats at the time.  Thundercats (1985 series) had started on Cartoon Network and I wanted to find episode guide so I'd know how many episodes and how many tapes I'd need.

Or maybe it was Atari?  I remember Atari Nexus and lots of information I never knew such as the solution to the first-ever video game easter egg. (I knew of the hidden screen but not how to get to it)

Sega netlink back in 96 or 97.I didn't have the money for a pc in those days,so the netlink for the sega saturn was the next best thing for me.I remember wasting alot of time "in the irc chatroom for it" beside playing duke nukem 3d and plenty of bomberman online for it.The broswer for it was by planetweb and it was ok 'but not as good for what a pc could do.

I played a few other MUDs


there was one on AOL I can't remember for the f*cking life of me.


It was clicky based (had drop downs/web pages), and it was neat.  There was PVP (In a place called The Nexus, I believe), and you could go into these mines and shit.

I had a psionic guy.

Nope, never played that.

Other MUD's, sure, but they were all pretty generic and interchangeable.
