W-Ring mini review
« on: September 19, 2012, 07:02:02 AM »
I just got this game and it's awesome! For those of you who haven't played it it plays a lot like Download and Dead Moon. There are 6 stages and a final mini stage/boss. There are also alternate paths for the levels, not sure if there's one for each but I think there is. You find them by hitting targets that reveal an icon which takes you to another path with a bunch of bonus points and sometimes an extra life. I haven't found them all yet though so that does add to the replay value.
The backgrounds and level variety are awesome. The themes of the levels are similar to GoT and Download with enemies like BioHazard Battle. A mix of insects and machines. I like the levels with the wavy crazy backgrounds which are similar to some of the backgrounds in Coryoon, Download and Zonk. There's also a level that scrolls super quick and you have to memorize the path and it's a lot of fun to play through. The weapon system is pretty sweet too, You have 5 weapons or so plus there are hidden icons which give you a special version of that weapon. Like most good hori shooters, you need the right weapon for the right spots. The laser powered up is the most useful to have for a boss fight though so try to grab that one before you enter the boss fight. I also like the orange missile weapon for levels with close corridors.
It does have a couple downfalls though. The music on some stages is kind of annoying. it's also pretty short, you can probably playthrough it in 25 minutes. I also had no problem getting to the last boss on one credit by my 3rd try on normal difficulty. I might try a harder setting next time I play it.
If you are looking into it, the game had a sticker on the case so look for that if you are going for a complete copy. I see a lot of copies for sale are $50+ but I've seen copies sell in auctions for $25-30 which is more realistic.
Overall I'd give this a 8/10 and rate this as one of the must have Hu card shooters. Naxat sure gave the PCE lots of love and they did a pretty good job with this one.

Hehe, figured as much. Just saying since you posted this in the sales thread.. ;) But it is a game that has been on my PCE wishlist.

Nice, thanks for that.  I've seen it from time to time and wondered, but it's one of the lesser known shooters.  I'll keep an eye out, you made it sound fun

W-Ring has some neat music. Worth it just for that.

I wonder if you grabbed the one on Ebay I had on my watch list? Like $38 with a slightly higher BIN? You don't have to answer but I was going to bid on that one. Seems like a cool game I will have to pick it up someday. Thanks for the review!

I got mine in a lot of games off of Goodwill Auctions.

Also I found out there is a cheat to make a ship barrier that is kinda cool. Go to the sound test and listen to tracks 7, 9, 3, 10 then start the game and you get a second ring that acts as a shield for a lot of bullets. I guess that's the second ring in "the double rings".

I'm gonna have to check this game out.  Looks like another game that's on my wanted list now.  Screen shots of the game looks pretty good and I'm a big fan of Download.  Thanks posting your thoughts/review.

Yep, this game is now on my want list.

Just a thought: maybe you could consider posting this review on GameFaqs?

Thanks.
