Who invented the term platformer.

Quote
The first is all platforming.

For it to be a platformer, it would consist of jumping on enemies, and collecting rocks.

I know where the terms

Action RPG ( what I call J-rpg  ( what I also call adventure ).
Comic Adventure ( even Graphic Adventure =; ](*,)   )
RPG
Point and click ( which is really just comic adventure/

I just want to know where did this term sprung up/. platformer?

So far what I understand, is a videogame, where you can jump and collect rocks, and maybe have a boss to fight that requires three or six hits. Basically when we have no RPG elements, and the game repeats itself over and over again with tasks, to keep the fun going. I think that sums it up for me.

What I believe as with the Indian Jones effect. People wanted  an Action, or Adventure game that is completely lacking violence whatsoever, and is still fun, So in the west we created meaningless but fun creations called platformers ).

For example

Quote
Earthworm Jim?

Action game because you can move him around but plays out like an J-RPG because the situation Jim is in.
Adventure Game because you guid Jim threw a bunch of levels.
Quote
J-rpg because he weilds a sword, or fire ball and shops at stores.
Platformer because he jumps up.

My problem is that when we create something and the world is lacking and is just a bunch of goofy sounds, and
make a no sense, we call it a platformer, but seriously it just limit us, because of jumping.

Like Wonder Boy/Adventure Island for example, started out as an Arcade game that in fact turned into an J-rpg.

Of course we have dangerous dave, oh look a jetpack oh look a gun, big spider kill splat.

Just somethng that I had to run off the top of my skull. I call em all J-RPGs, just to remind that when Falcom made the knight started to move around inside in a FPS box, they changed history alongside that other game,
nobody wants to think about, because it is just too cruel to play and finish.

The name evolved from the genre's first game designer/programmer, Pat Fawrmir.  Duh.

If earthworm jim is a j-rpg, then is splatterhouse a sports game? He swings the 2x4 like a bat.

A platformer consists of platforms. I think common sense invented the term.

I don't know what this wasn't the first response to this thread, though Necro does get bonus points for ingenuity.

It's also probably one of the easiest concepts to execute in a 2D manner for games since you just go/up and left/right to work your way through a level.  The thing I personally like a lot about platformers though is that the level design can make or break them, so a developer putting effort into the details normally pays off on a platforming game.

But arent those things part of the enviorment itself? I mean seriously, lets be real, I mean seriously

tram
elevator,
wire
fence
etc
are all enviormental things, meaning this genre is is basically saying, if the character jumps up and down and moves around with things in the eniviorment, it must be a platformer.

You know I what I called those games? Mini-games or to be more correct, Arcade games.
Because these are the type of games that only exsist inside an arcade itself. Am I right?

Only on a videogame system/or computer gaming machine, you will find adventure games where you move all over the level jumping to the next stage, but apparently these are also known as action games,

But I just call them J-rpg because apparently in the west, videogames have not evolved past,
that Fox walking on roof tops avoiding centurians.  I mean seriously, Shantae, and many other Wayfoward games, and Kirby is the result of the Japanese pulling the RPG, and then somebody being smart enough to put normal everyday items in that world. I could be wrong and these action games are just sophsticated beat em ups.............Megaman Zero

Imagine this, when was the last time a western action/adventure/platformer game was actually cool before 1999? It just seems that the comiverse of Japan, melted into the
videogames, and out pop these delightfull treats,

Back in the land of the Maddona, we have either killer sprees called FPS or Point and click games ( comic adventures ).

The name evolved from the genre's first game designer/programmer, Pat Fawrmir.  Duh.

Just did a search, does not compute, not Pat Fawrmir.

Me too,

Platforms are for game like Adol with tall shoes since he is little boy with fire heare.

Uhmmmmmmmmm Adol is a young adult ( at least in the first game ) who ventures from land to land seeking adventure ( your standard DAD character ). Adol is a commercial spin-off from
Dragon Slayer along with Popful mail. At least we all know he scored big time in afenas dungeons.

Same thing with Link, In Zelda he was a young adul, around puberty ( meaning he was fully grown, ) and by Zelda II he was done, where he finally gets to score with the original Zelda.
However with OOT they decided to go further back into the past, with Link as a kid, Then they derailed the whole thing, with the mask bit ( fancy graphics and stuff but pointless ).

RegalSin, you sure picked the right point to argue out of all that.
You're right. Adol is not a little boy. He's a young adult! Damn right!
