Tokimeki Card Paradise... any good?
« on: November 02, 2012, 03:15:17 AM »
I know this is technically an "18+" game, but is it fun to play beyond the mild cartoonish nudity? Thinking about picking this one up, as the wife is really into card games and I think she may play this one, too.

I've seen the youtube video (for those who haven't seen it... ), but it dipicts a weird card game I've never heard of before. Would have rather seen the blackjack or poker games.

So, anyone have this that cares to comment?

This is one of those games that's actually very non-Japanese friendly because it's pretty easy to play. There is also a relatively high "reward" to effort ratio. I can't see this being fun for more than a day or two, and it's basically the equivalent of any solitaire gambling game. Shanghai probably has more longevity, and is probably more fun. Fewer tits though. :)

It's a shame it's on the pricey side. Fun or not, I don't think many gamers want to dump much cash on a card game.

I just happen to be able to get a copy for much less than what it sells for on ebay and figured I'd ask about it before purchasing.

Filler, you mentioned "Shanghai"... forgive my ignorance, but is that another card type game for the PC-FX? One thats as easy to play as Tokimeki (as is, no real need to understand Japanese)

Ooh, nice. I'm looking at getting a copy myself for the collection but I'll probably be spending over $100. :P

Shanghai is that solitaire mahjongg game that has been ported to every system in existence. The FX version is 上海 万里の長城 Shanghai: The Great Wall. I haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet but I'm sure it's pretty much like every other version. I think the one I spent the most time with in the past is probably one of the Saturn versions, or maybe the Sega Master System version. It's one of only 4 games I own for the SMS.

EDIT: To answer your question more directly, yes it should be as easy to play. There should be no need to understand Japanese. Just match the mahjongg tiles with other tiles with the same picture that are not surrounded by other tiles. It's surprisingly engaging.

I haven't played the PC-FX version, but Shanghai in general is pretty fun and I found it easy to pick up. Now if only I could get a grasp on real mahjong... :(

Tell me about it. :( At it's core mahjongg is kind of simple. Riichi adds more rules and makes it just a little too complicated to pick up easily though. Seems like a relatively fun game all-in-all. Have you given it a try before?

I tried learning with this Flash game:

http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html

I used that same site's Hanafuda Koi-Koi game to learn that and had no problems, but when I play the mahjong game, I just keep getting destroyed and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I may be doing something wrong myself. I just tried this morning and I actually got to declare riichi and won by tsumo but it was a bit confusing. Normally though I keep getting to a point where I think I can win but I get this "No multiplier" pop up window. Are you having the same trouble? I just got to where I could declare tsumo and I got the "No multiplier" when I tried. It could be a glitch. I'd try a different game, and just refer to the same rules on that page if they are helpful.

EDIT: Hoo-boy, I've started down the rabbit hole pretty far with this one. I ended up watching part 1 and half of part 2 of this almost 4 hour set of videos on how to play Riichi Mahjongg. I recommend it just because this guy is completely awesome. He demonstrates really professionally, but uses SD anime figures as stand-ins for players and shows clips from anime. Not to mention the games he uses for demonstration. :)

I haven't confirmed this but it's possible the "No multiplier" I got above meant that I did not have a "yaku" for an open hand so was unable to win. I also realized at this time I don't own a single mahjongg game. :(

Yeah, Japanese Mahjong is a lot more complicated then it's Chinese cousin.  You have to have a special hand or you can't win.  And of course the challenge is memorizing all these so you can actually make them.

Ended up purchasing this game. Should see it in about a week. I'll post some photos and mini-review it like I did for Pia Carrot... should be interesting

is there also the possibility to save the images/scenes or a gallery viewer?
