For pro rasslin' fans
« on: November 23, 2012, 01:55:54 AM »
I understand the attitude era was a great time in 'the sport' but trying to relive this now with storylines revolving around sex scandals or he's sleeping with who, and she's cheating on him with them are not what was great about the time period. The 1996-2001 "Attitude Era" was great for the redefinition of Pro Wrestling.  The nWo, Steve Austin, The Rock, Goldberg, "Crow Style" Sting, and the whole 'we don't give a f*ck' attitude of DX and ECW was what was great about those days.

Austin Aeries told Hulk Hogan that Brooke Hogan is sleeping with Bully Ray
Vickie Guererro found footage of John Cena and AJ Lee allegedly being intimate.
and then earlier this year AJ Styles had an annoying storyline with random footage and pics of him supposedly cheating on his wife.

I understand some jokingly call Pro Wrestling a Man's Soap Opera but why do the writers take this literal?

I think I'm just going to grab my copies of Battle Royale and Fire Pro 3 on Monday nights and just make up my own storylines on Notebook paper like I did when I was a kid.

I think Sumo Master is pissed cause he found his hot blonde manager lady sleeping with Spitfire Spike again!!  Let the WAY BEGIN!!

Coincidentally, yesterday I went through some Wikipedia entries yesterday of BITD superstars, starting with Ric Flair, then, Andre the Giant, Ultimate Warrior, Him "hacksaw" Duggan, etc etc, and many more.  good times.

There are a lot of non-soap things that are currently going on / have been going on in today's wrestling (Storm vs Roode rivalry, Aces & Eights, etc).  Wouldn't let soap-ish stuff ruin it for me, especially since some of it -- like the AJ thing -- was an obvious load of bull meant to establish the bad guys as fools who will say or do anything to try to get ahead, kind of like a wrestling version of Team Rocket or Bulk & Skull, etc.

Ok, I totally can get into the Team Rocket = Daniels/ Kazarian thing.  Mind blown!  :)

Personally I loved the Roode/Storm feud and was a bit sad that it didn't wind up with the two of them wrestling for the belt at BFG in Oct.  Storm finally was able to beat Roode in a hell of a battle, but now they had Storm get tricked into giving up his #1 contendership to Roode.  Maybe this will end with Roode regaining the belt from Hardy?

I think TNA in general is headed in the right direction with the younger guys from Gut Check being integrated to the regular roster now.  Lots of potential in those guys and gal.  :)

I would just rather the shows be more action, wit, and feuding as opposed to "Who's sleeping with who - E Hollywood story" stuff.  :)

La Parka > Anything in Wrestling Today

I still watch when I am free Monday night and I got out for the big PPVs, but WWE has not matched the WCW and likely never will.

It's amazing to me that anyone would look back at "the attitude era" as being good in any way, but I guess things have deteriated so badly that maybe they were great by comparison.

I don't know. What I do know is that American wrestling is, for some reason, the most respected in the world, and certainly the highest paying, it is pure SHIT compared to Mexican and Japanese stuff and has been for 20 years. Identical looking ripped dudes in black shorts talking into mics for 45 minutes of every hour trying to "shock" with saucy content is no substitute for actual athleticism. The shit is garbage.

For about a year TNA was actually really impressive, but they eventually succeeded in what they aparently always wanted: to be just like WWE.

I agree with SignofZeta, my uncle will work with Mexican wrestlers a lot, he was trainer and looking back at some of his old tapes the he would keep, Mexican and Japanese wrestling is way different then American wrestling , just pure figthing and action and these people will actually hold grudges against each other personally and out the ring that even when they would be out and about they will not get along with each other.

I guess I look at 'the attitude era' as a time when professional wrestling, at least in the states, was sort of re-imagined.  The ECW style of hardcore mixed with more adult/ comedy themed storylines had me interested.  It was better than the PG "New Generation" of WWF from 1993-1996 and what currently is being produced by the WWE.
I don't know. What I do know is that American wrestling is, for some reason, the most respected in the world, and certainly the highest paying, it is pure SHIT compared to Mexican and Japanese stuff and has been for 20 years.

I wouldn't say most respected, and I'm not sure how one can classify a style of wrestling by where it's located, outside of Wrestling in Mexico as that is pure awesome high flying action almost in every match.  But, just saying USA wrestling is shit and Japanese Wrestling is awesome is not completely correct.  I've been following New Japan Pro for a long time and always catch the biggest PPV of the year "Wrestle Kingdom" in January and I'd have to say that they push just as much storyline as the American shows do.  Their PPVs showcase the pure wrestling talent for sure, but the weekly shows are often just as 'chatty' as WWE.  They even showcase many former TNA and WWE wrestlers like MVP or Tyson Tomko now.
Also, are you aware of groups like ROH, Dragon Gate, or Chikara?  These could be more of what you're looking for, are located in the USA and often put their shows for free to stream/watch on their websites.  ROH is sort of like an action first ECW without the crazy drama storylines.  Dragon Gate is Japanese themed wrestling in the states. and Chikara is probably the fastest wrestling I've ever seen live.  ROH actually has an upcoming show in December that will feature Jerry Lynn in his last match, one that I'm really looking forward to.  Also, you can check out a quick 10 minute weekly show of some of the best stuff Chikara does on youtube. A show podcast/show that I absolutely enjoy.  You should check out Chikara agogo.
Maybe check those out and see what you think.  :)

100% agree.  I'm so sick of every guy being produced by American wrestling having the same look and wrestling style.  I bet if guys like Dusty Rhodes and Mick Foley came to Titan Towers looking for work in 2012 that Vince McMahon would say "You don't have the look we're after! Get out of here!".... It's sad really.
For about a year TNA was actually really impressive, but they eventually succeeded in what they aparently always wanted: to be just like WWE.

TNA had something going with the different style ring and they pushed the x-division guys pretty hard back when they were just getting started, but they started to lose that when they brought in too many storyline writers and not enough pure wrestling for each show... I would agree that they are trying to be more like WWE with their storylines and the people that they push (Jeff Hardy, RVD, Bully Ray (All ex-WWF Wrestlers)), but I will give them credit for at least trying.  I mean, TNA's biggest PPV of the year was headlined with an Indy style/X-division guy wrestling a motivated and equally talented Jeff Hardy for the world title.  It was a great match!

I guess when I classify "American" wrestling I'm going by what I see on TV, and the same with the Japan stuff. If there is really great American stuff (which I wouldn't doubt, I'm absolutely not an expert on this at all) then its a lot harder to find than Raw.

I liked the old FMW, IWA Deathmatch, and All Japan stuff along with ECW before 2000. Every now and then on really slow days I will still scour youtube for old Vader or Muta matches from Japan I had not seen before, just for the f*ck of it.

Speaking of Vader I actually did enjoy his RAW Return a couple months ago:

Actually looks pretty good for an old guy :)
