« on: November 26, 2012, 01:05:46 AM »
Hi all .
A guy called stef, has made a technical demo on genesis/md, based on badapple video ..

This demo run in 320*224 with 4 gray shades and with a frame rate of 30 fps ..

You can test the 8 mb rom here :  https://dl.dropbox.com/u/93332624/dev/megadrive/demo/BadApple.bin
emulator : http://umk3.hacking-cult.org/2.11hack.zip

You can see, the original video here :

Someone can do the same on PCE ??
Personaly, i don't have skills to make the same, or equivalent .

This demo is really impressive ..

It would be far more impressive if it was done with sprites and BG tiles.

HuVideo can fill the screen with 90 color fmv. But it's bottlenecked by being designed around the Super CD format. A HuCard rom could do much more.

Yes, but this demo fit into 8 mb, and it decompress each frame on the fly ..
What's resolution is supported by HuVideo ???

I doubt that it can do a 320*224 video at 30 fps ...
All videos i have seen about huvideo, is near of 256*96 at 10/15 fps max .

The 8MB demo doesn't work yet. I've talked to Stef about it and he'll make some adjustments. There are actually a lot of Bad Apple demos for the Genesis by different people. My favorite one (so far) was 4MB and used VGM music that sounded pretty awesome.  There was another one that had the digitized singing done by the YM2612's channel 3 (apparently an undocumented "feature") and there are a bunch that use channel for the PCM.

Also, moving to a sub forum that's perhaps a bit more appropriate.

EDIT: The current build of th 8 MB Bad Apple does not work on model 1 hardware, at least not my VA2. But it DOES work perfectly on mdoel 2 hardware. Gotta say that it's pretty damn impressive, definitely the best Bad Apple demo I've seen so far.

Shouldn't this thread have been moved to Turbo/PCE Game/Tool Development, since we're talking about this being developed for PCE?

Like I said, HuVideo isn't a PCE fmv format so much as a SCD streaming format. I believe that it's bottlenecked by the CD-ROM speed as much as anything. It's done full screen video by doubling the height. HuVideo might still be good enough if someone could program it the right way, since that Genesis demo fills most of the screen of each frame with only two single (visible) color tiles, which should take up much less bandwidth than 96 unique detailed and colorful tiles per frame. If this is the case, then the Sega-CD should be able to do it too.

The PCE is supposed to be technically faster at animation than the Genesis and is about as powerful. The only limitation for doing this as a straight rom would be if this could somehow only be pulled off by dual tile layers or if bank switching would hinder it. It might end up being more or less than 8MB, but it's not exactly the same hardware so it won't be exactly the same, no matter what.

Anyways, potentially self-imposed size limits aside, here is something very similar without sound, but much more color and detail:

It's only a matter of who is both qualified to pull it off on PCE and cares enough about this exact same thing to recreate it.

I moved it here because only a small part of his post kind of asked about PC Engine possibility and seemed more intent on showing off the Sega demo, but if y'all want it in the homebrew section I'll move it there.

Anyway someone did a Sega CD version and it was nowhere near this good. Like most Sega CD video, it was only 15fps.

Would you have any links? Mostly for comparison's sake. I've searched but can't find anything other than the one Stef refers to as his inspiration.

Other youtube videos I've seen are uploads of Stef's Bad Apple.
