I aint gonna name no f*cking names, but I am sitting here looking at a TurboDuo Herc sent to me for a friend who wanted svideo added. No prob, just a quick in and out and back in the mail after finishing Hercs xeye. A member here was supposed to have done a cap job on this unit prior. Audio was low when it arrived, was wondering why. Popped it open, and low and behold, a minimal cap job. Very minimal. Yes, the shield was never removed it looks like, and no, due to that, no caps under the shield were even checked or replaced either it seems due to this. So that its stated, yeah, the old caps are leaking in areas, and clearly had been for awhile. I cleaned up around as many as I could get to with q-tips to buy some time for Hercs friend. He will have to decide who to send it to to finish up the job, as I don't have time for such a large overhaul with my own stuff around here I have to work on. Like I said, I aint naming no names, but the person who did this is basically put on notice, as I am well aware of who did the work, and I am sure they know who the f*ck they are. You going to take cash for a cap/repair job on a system you know is prone to total cap failure with leaks, do the entire god damned f*cking unit. Don't cheap out. Its bullshit, for serious.

edit: also like to add, before anyone sez who cares, big deal, and ask why I don't just recap it myself. 1. I have about 16 Socket A, Socket 7, Socket 370, Slot A and Socket 754 motherboards all sitting here waiting for recaps so I can use the stuff in system builds. 2. I have about as many sound cards awaiting the same kind of work. 3. The svideo work was basically going to be for free, as a favor since it is a quick enough task I can squeeze it in. Extensive cap work, well, besides not having the time to sit around and do a Duo right now, paywise it would not be worth it for me as I make much more doing my other stuff.

Man that sucks.  On a separate note, you have to love the simplicity of these old PCBs.  I had never seen a Duo cracked open.
I'm busy playing pinball, but I still drop by to visit.

Wow.  That sucks that someone here would do that.  Unless, maybe they did not realize that there were caps under that shield.  I dunno, but hopefully they will own up to it, and refund the guy for this work.  :(  We spose to trust each other here, especially our modders.

I've ways wondered how people could be so eager to do such significant work for prices I consider ridiculously low...now we know. They don't!

All of the caps should have been replaced when this was originally worked on, but as you can see, only just enough was done just to get the audio going again. I dont know how much said person was paid to do said work, but when Herc and I talked about this Duo, it seemed to be under the impression that this system was totally worked over.  I don't know how it sounded when it first arrived to the owner, but Herc told me they thought it was somewhat low themselves when I mentioned it. When I was going to pop it open I figured what I expected to see was maybe some slightly off value caps or something causing the low volume, which wouldn't have been as big a deal. Just happens its this bullshit instead, which there is no excuse for since like everyone f*cking here has known about the Duo suffering total cap failure for years now...

Yeah, a "quick fix" on a black Duo is completely pointless.

Whoa, that isn't cool at all.  I'm surprised its a member here that did the work.

I was thinking the same.  A full cap job isn't a easy task.  For the amount of hours it takes, I would expect people here would charge a lot more.

I know Ive got units in that supposedly had caps done, but Id just find the sound area caps done and nothing else.  It is possible that they were done a while ago when it was believed that the problem area was just the sound area.

No joke about having cap jobs piled up... why did you have to remind me about all my vintage computer mainboards, soundcards etc... :(

I don't believe it was that long back. That would be quite a few years back when that was still the assumption. This work was done/not done not too far back. Herc would know when exactly.

Back when I worked on Duos one of the first ones I worked on only had the audio caps done and nothing else. Whoever did it didn't do that great of a job, as some of the caps he installed weren't soldered in very well and he even managed to pull a pad off, which is really unusual as the Duo has a pretty durable PCB. He also never even bothered doing the leaded caps, and sure enough, a few of the leaded caps leaked as well. I actually know who did it but I don't feel like naming names either.

I'm with blue, this could have been years ago. I know when I started doing cap work for peeps back in 2008 I was only replacing a few caps in the pre & post opt amp until sound came fully on.
Turbo fan since 1991 after owning my first system.

Like I said, it was not that far back, and I know who did the work, and to be blunt, we knew about total cap failure taking place since 2k7 in both the Duo and Turboexpress, and it was suspected it was going to take place as early as 2k5. As stated prior, if you want to know exact timeframe, ask Herc and he may tell you.

Why not just state who did it so we can avoid them, or allow them to clear their name?

Because nosy people with only 37 post to their name don't need to know who it is, for right now anyway. And due to that, there is no name that needs to be cleared. Who did this will definitely know its their own work. If it ends up down the road I hear about more of this shit going on, because this is not the only issue with their name attached that I have been made aware of, then I will list who it is. Until then, it is not my Duo, so it's up to the owner or Herc if they want to throw the guy under the f*cking bus publicly. This is basically a wake up call for the person who did/did not do, the work presented on said TurboDuo.

That's a bummer that someone didn't re-cap the whole thing. It's really the best thing to do so you don't have to worry about it later. I could understand if it was stated that the repair would have been for changing most of the audio caps at a low price. It's another thing to say a full re-cap would be done and charge for it when it obviously was not.
