HELP! My Duo RX stopped working!
« on: February 26, 2006, 04:04:17 PM »
Tonight I started up Kabuki Den and noticed right away that the CD-ROM was making a high pitched squeal kinda noise.

The CD music cut out at times until finally while starting a cinema, the CD drive got stuck and tried loading the sound again and again.

I swapped Kabuki Den for Dungeon Explorer II and it wouldn't even start at all. I got the "Please insert disc" message instead.

Does anyone have a good idea what's wrong? If so, do I have any hope of fixing it, or do I need to get another RX and have it modified again? :(

I'm sorry to hear this :( . I can't help you, that's up to the technical pros. What's wrong with it now when you use it? Always says "Please Insert Disc" whenever you try to play a CD game? HuCard games work fine, I assume?

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Its just the CD-ROM, HuCards work fine.

Kabuki Den will still load, but the sound cuts out and I'm sure that if I try that cinema again it'll freeze up.

I just managed to get my save files across to my Turbo Duo. But the Kisado erases the Tennokoe Bank everytime the converter doesn't work(3/4 of the time).

So now if I continue to play on the TD I might not be able to recover the save file later when I want to use it to capture images on a system with an S-Video mod.

Anyways, right now I'm looking for a lense cleaning disc. My old banged up TD used to sound like this for a while and it plays fine today.

Sent you a PM on this.  Sounds like either a mechanical problem (like the lid's not down all the way) or like the laser isn't reading properly.  Doesn't sound to me like a typical "sound issue" which is seldom if ever accompanied by access problems.

Damn, how many DUO's have been dying? This is really sad. We should have a graveyard to remember the fallen consoles (and handhelds! I haven't forgotten that many TurboExpresses / GT's have had problems).

The first GT I bought from a HK seller, and it came DOA. Nothing I can do about that. I sold it on ebay. Beware of ebay seller from HK.

The second GT I bought from a forum member here. It was working fine out the box, and it looked in mint condition. I played it for hour and the display went dim, then dark.

I turned it off and on a few times thinking it was just a glitch. Whenever I turned it on the display was always dark. I tried to increase the brightness but it had no effect. Eventually the GT died two days later, it never turned on again.

I suspect the previous owner ( or owners) used the wrong AC adaptor or used rechargeable AAs. I really do think recharageable AA will degrade the longevity of the GT.

Currently my GT and TE (thanks D-Lite) are working like champs. I'm using a ext. rechargeable battery pack 7.2volts 2800 mah via power input. No problems so far.

This sounds very similar to what happened to my US Duo.  It made a high pitched noise at one point too, although it wasn't very loud.
I pushed things around and it was working fairly well again for a little bit but now the sound is cutting out more and more frequently as the lens keeps losing track of the music.  not the typical sound problem these systems run into.  I got a new deck but i'd love to get my old one working again.
D-lite - if you can offer any repair help , please let me know too.

What was the problem with the GTs?
In addition to rolins' problems, we had a bunch of folks complaining about failing (or failed) audio from the built-in speaker. I can't remember if headphones worked or not.

I suspect that a bunch of folks have experienced this problem, but since TE / GT ownership is pretty low here, we're not getting a representative sample of  how bad it is. Of course, I hope I'm wrong. I hope that only a handful of handhelds will experience problems. BUT, with my luck....

I almost forgot, my second GT that died on me also had low speaker problem too. The low speakers is not a real problem since the headphone port could still be used.

The problem with low audio might contribute to power failures on the TE/GT. But I'm just guessing here and I haven't proven it.
