Also, it's worth noting that the only console to sell more units during its "launch window" (the first three months) than the WiiU is the Wii.

So...yeah...doom and gloom bullshit.
Games I Need: Bonk 3 (HuCard), Legend of Hero Tonma, Magical Chase, Soldier Blade, Super Air Zonk.

Got one to sell? PM me!

Ding Ding Ding.

People have been speculating about Nintendo getting out of the hardware business since before the GameCube launched. Their own franchises alone will sell enough systems to make any consoles they release profitable in the long run. Nintendo is all about controlling the distribution method and medium their software is distributed through. That's why they were late to jump onto optical discs, that's why they went proprietary with the N64 carts, GameCube discs, and so on. Of the three major console manufacturers they're the one I see as being the least likely to stop making consoles.

I concur, but will we see more peripherals/systems from them all unified by a single OS if you will, or will there be an evolution of the "console?"

I can see neogeo station like console eventually being released; a portable with enough power and graphics to satisfy hardcore gamers, on the go gaming fans and TV gaming afficionados all in one, or something along those lines.  Maybe.

You quoted this kind of strangely.

In any event I see Nintendo eventually moving to one software platform, and eventually releasing a console/handheld. Imagine if the Wii U tablet contained everything in the game console itself had a docking station for charging your tablet and acted as a box to connect it to your TV if need be. I think that's the future.

Nintendo as mentioned before is all about controlling the distribution of their products. So I suspect say Sony or other companies might be more inclined to settle on a universal platform for their consoles.

I can also see Nintendo "dropping" the DS line to become the console and in turn making a "communication device (read cell phone) branded with their stuff and mobile game centric. Their e-shop would BLOW UP!

I can't see Nintendo making a phone, but if they did... just having a cell phone with decent buttons on it would be killer.
Take off yer flip flops and set up the tripod: it's bag kickin' time!

Well they did "mimick" a tablet for the current system so anything is possible. I would see anything in the future as keeping with the mobile form factor and allowing calls to be made via apps, V-IP and all that jazz.

Anyone worried about the demise of Nintendo needs to read up on their video game history. How many generations have they existed through now? Sure some of the early success they manipulated their way to the top with but while not always on top the last few generations they still seem to make money on their products and have the audacity to produce hardware that turns profit on day 1!!!
Something the other big players can't do for at least a year or two post-launch.
Nintendo is good at making money and that they have down pat. Of course they have to; they don't have multiple divisions making consumer electronics or software that PC manufacturers buy to run their computers. So they have to survive on their game consoles and game sales to survive.

Don't get me wrong; I would love a world where we had 5 different consoles vying for our attention and would like it even better if Sega and/or NEC had thoroughly trounced them in the bit wars. Hell I wish Atari had made a hit with the Jaguar and the Lynx but they obviously did not.

Nintendo has Pokemon.......... This franchise alone is a system killer for Sony and Microsoft. Can you imagine it the day Sony and MS releases their new systems Nintendo releases Pokemon for the Wii U? TOTAL DEVASTATION FOR SONY AND MS.
