Anybody still find time for the 2600?
« on: February 07, 2013, 11:41:34 AM »
I don't know if anybody is into retro video games in here, but I recently pulled out my 2600 and had a go at it. Now, the 2600 is what really started it all for me. My first console, and first experience with home video games when I was about 7. A few games I pulled out and played today...Night Driver, Circus Atari, and Missle Command. Night Driver still has a good sense of speed and missle command is a great port for what they had to work with. Circus Atari wasn't even close to as fun as I remember, but hell, can't win 'em all. I remember keystone capers being a lot of fun along with river raid, but I don't seem to have these at the moment.
Anyway, enough about me.  What was the last game you played on a 2600?

I sold my 2600 and all my games when I was in Jr. High because I had just gotten the Nintendo Entertainment System. I regretted it years later then while video game hunting, picked up a 2600 junior system and a few of the games that I used to own. I still haven't played it but it's nice to know that I can whenever I get the urge.

I can safely say NO! ;) No thanks, not interested in the slightest bit... But hey, I guess I do owe the ole 2600 for my love of shooters. I think Megamania is its best shooter, followed by River Raid, another good one (I remember my dad actually liked the latter). Anyway, hell if I can remember what the last game I played for it was though. Way too long ago.

I was actually just thinking about unloading a bunch of my 2600 stuff because I don't remember the last time I had the urge to hook it up.

Haven't had it out in a while, mostly because its seems to be a pain in the ass to hook up. I probably leave it out if i had it modded. Last time I played I had a group of friends over for a few drinks, for some reason the more I drink the better I am at Kaboom (same goes for Tetris). Downloaded the app for Iphone so I could play Tempest, my 8 year old gets more play out of it than I do.

gave away two 2600's and 80 games a few years ago. The only game i would still play on a regular basis is Dragon stomper from the star path supercharger. emulator is just about the only way to play that one these days. Basic, but great game.

Combat and Warlords are great...I think that's it. Once I got my Colecovision I never needed 2600 again. The system, frankly, was a piece of crap and I miss it not even slightly. Horrible games, terrible joysticks...the best part of 2600 was the very good box art on some of the games.

You know, thats so painfully true. I grew up on the 2600 and thought it was the cats ass when i was a kid. Tried to get back into it three years ago and was sorry I did. looked like shit, played like shit.

I spent a lot of time in the arcade in the 80s so I knew how good games could be and how incredibly shitty, barely recognizable, 2600 ports of games were. I always hated those f*cking sticks. They required so much damned muscle to use!

When the NES came out I was impressed with Super Mario Bros and the NES ports of Donkey Kong 3, Donkey Kong Junior, etc. Of course, once the NES really got going it too started to be flooded with horrendous ports of shit way beyond its grasp like Ikari Warriors, Heavy Barrel, and whatever the hell those Strider, Rygar and Ninja Gaiden things were supposed to be. Putting shops in a game does not make up for its shortcomings!

My favorite NES games have always been the ones it handled easily like Excitebike and Ballon Fight. By the time stuff like Battletoads and Mighty Final Fight came out the flicker and slowdown were so damned terrible...

Similarly, Combat, the 2600 pack-in is my favorite 2600 game with Warlords close behind. Rampage and Double Dragon are very nearly unplayable to anyone who has actually experienced a decent video game in their life. Pac Man isn't any use to a real fan of the arcade game, but it serves more like a Pac Man from a parallel universe. If you've never been to the arcade Pac Man 2600 is a decent game. If you spent $200 at the arcade on the real thing you are going to be pretty pissed with the POS 2600 game.

One of the ways I describe PC Engine is that its basically NES without the flicker. 8-bit games done properly. Its not just because the system is way more powerful than a NES, but also because usually the developers knew how to chill the f*ck out. Instead of flickering all over the place, just make the sprites a little smaller or don't layer them so much.

Occasionally I play 2600 games. While I have a few different 2600 systems I generally play them on my Atari 7800. A few months ago I was playing River Raid and Pitfall 2.

I keep my AV(Longhorn) modded 2600 mainly for conventions. I've pick up a few games over the years. I keep it hooked up in my console area so it readily accessible at any time.

I don't know if anybody is into retro video games in here
I would say everyone on this forum is...Or do you consider retro pre-turbo?

Keystone is one of my favs and I totally agree on Missle, very playable and fun. I play Yar's Revenge and Warlords at least once a year when I break it out at AZ.

Yes. This was just a joke to open the thread.

KABOOM is terrific and addicting, still very playable today, and none of the current remakes come close
I keep seeing Warlords which is one I'm not familiar with.  What type of game is it?
