Of course, once the NES really got going it too started to be flooded with horrendous ports of shit way beyond its grasp like Ikari Warriors, Heavy Barrel, and whatever the hell those Strider, Rygar and Ninja Gaiden things were supposed to be.

I agree with most of this, but I need some kind of explanation as to why Ninja Gaiden Arcade is better than Ninja Gaiden on NES.

Damn near every system is guilty of having horrific shit dumped off on it, and still have a library of good games worth playing. In my opinion the 2600 is one of the worst offenders. Development cycles were 2-4 months for many games with one guy making them. just way to much crap. thats why the 2600 has not stood the test of time for me. Despite that, dragon stomper, chiplifter, seaquest, megamania, spider fighter, combat, and warlords are still worth playing.

I sometimes fire up Astroblast/smash, Berzerk, Defender, and a few other games on my INTV2 w/ Atari System Diddler.

His Rygar example is another example of this. NES Rygar is way better than the arcade one.

"Way better" is subjective.

The Atari 2600 was almost our first game system. In 1989 or so, a kid in our neighborhood tried to sell one to me for $15 but he couldn't get it to work. I was never into it, it was before my time.

I recently picked up the 2600 with 30 or so games from a guy at my last company. Still can't really get into it. Most games didn't work correctly, remotes didn't work right and picture quaily is too grainy. So it's setting in a box right now. I might off loaded to eBay eventually.

I love Rygar on NES. SOOOOO much more depth and fun than the arcade game (and I love the arcade game for what it is....but DAMN, they are totally different games and I had so much fun with NES)

Anyway...Rygar arcade is like a shoot-em-up without the dopplegangers*

*hahahahhaha. you know what I'm sayin'.**

** if you don't know what I'm sayin'...well, NINJA SPIRIT had dopplegangers.

Yeah, the NES Rygar was a very interesting and awesome game with lots of replay value to boot. Music was pretty good too. While the arcade version was total beat-'em-up action, this port was turned into an Action-RPG and by then that had become my favorite genre, so I was quite pleased with it even though it wasn't what I thought it would be. You know, it really wasn't intended to be a "port," they intentionally took it in a RPG direction as mentioned. I also really liked that there was a trick to access an alternate, sort of damaged/undeveloped world by jumping at a certain point near a cliff and managing to land on it. This would then allow you to explore sections of the game you normally weren't supposed to access. I remember how cool it was having discovered it and I believe I read there was actually a boss you could fight at some point, but yeah, there was lots to explore! The game just had a mystique to it for me and that was part of it.

It's one of my top NES favorites, that's for sure, and I recommend it! You can sort of still remember the eerie music of the last area before fighting the final boss; overall, a very satisfying game, start to finish if you ask me. Anyway, Zeta...you are wrong on that one!!!! ;) But I agree about Ninja Gaiden; I liked the arcade version better...

Most games didn't work correctly, remotes didn't work right and picture quaily is too grainy.

Sounds pretty much working to me.

Few people here hatin' on the 2600!  What's up with that?  Warlords is one of the best 4p games hands down, even to this day.  Some other good ones mentioned too: Kaboom, Megamania, Missile Command, Yar's Revenge.  Let's not forget Berzerk (a fav of mine), Frogger, Space Invaders, Turmoil, Gyruss.  Respect the 2600!

But to answer your question: it's sadly been a while since I've played mine.  Getting my refurbished ColecoVision back this week from a member of the AtariAge forums, so I'll be playing that for the forseeable future (and I'm giddy with excitement)!

Mine have been boxed up since the big move. As soon as I can find it I may just raffle it off here.
