What Bernie is playing... :)
« on: March 03, 2013, 01:41:41 AM »
In the same vein as Necromancer, I decided to start a thread with details on what I am currently playing on the Turbo.  This may include games I have completed or started, whatever.   =P~  Anyway, in the last several years with current consoles, I've found that I can only play an hour or two at the most before I am ready to put it down for the day.  I have always thought that it was because I'm older and have shit to do, ect..  However, I find myself playing the Turbo for HOURS, and I do mean hours.  Why is that, I asked myself....  Well, for me it's obvious and just proves that retro games had to do something to lure you in, besides bombard you with awesome graphics.  For me, it has always been about story line and game design.  Today's games are still fun, but I find myself saying I will play an hour and put it down.  With my Turbo, that is not the case.  I actually dont want to put it down.  Just yesterday I had to put it down, because my damn thumb was starting to not function..   :D  Now, that brings back a memory or two.  Anyway, on to the games....

I started Ys Book I & II not too long ago, and managed to beat it yesterday afternoon.  I believe I logged in almost 6 hours playing yesterday, which is an amazing feat for me, since I haven't played any game that long since Final Fantasy X.  I managed to beat Darm, after he handed me my ass over and over and over and over...yeah you get the idea right?  But the game was just built to make me WANT to keep going.  That says a lot for a game, especially in today's gaming market.

Anyway, this morning I started Ys III, and right away I am impressed with how much better it looks and sounds than the SNES version.  I played this game on the SNES years ago, and loved it, but damn it looks soooo much better on the Duo.  I cannot get over how vastly improved it is.  Now, granted I had it for the Duo all those years ago, but I never messed with it since I had beaten the SNES version...  Oh well, good things DO come to those who wait I guess.  So, with that..  I will start my game journey.

So pumped for you!  Great thread!

I'm super excited to play Y's for the first time, and I'm kind of glad I never played any of the other ports.  I'll get the true experience on the true console.

There's just something about the Ys games on the Turbo. Even though I have other games that I haven't finished or even played yet, I still find myself putting them down to play Ys yet again... even though I've beaten it multiple times.

Mmm, Ys.  Great games to start off such a thread, and I presume that Ys IV is on deck?

Man, that tower in Ys I drove me nuts.  I felt like Adol was actually walking around the disc. :)

Yeah ys III is way better on the DUO although those choppy scrolling backgrounds still annoy the crap out of me. Some backgrounds still look okay being a little choppy but the main town you start off in is absolutely horrible. Hudson would have been better off to have no scrolling at all there.

YES!!!  This is the one thing that annoys me...  It's very distracting, and actually makes it harder to focus on your character.  My only complaint so far though.

I third the YS3 is way better on the Duo. My only wish it was longer and harder, I finished it in one sitting a shame really...

I think all versions of Ys 3 are equally great.  The choppy scrolling on the CDrom2 was totally uncalled for and just drives me crazy.  All the 16-bit versions are too short, but a blast to play through on any given afternoon.  :)  I never understand the hate towards the SNES or Genesis versions.  Sure the CD has the best audio and the cutscenes, but it's still the same base game with a different twist from each of the 16-bitters strong/weak points.  I love 'em all.

For something completely awesome/new for Ys III fans, play The Oath in Felghana on PSP.  That game is simply amazing to play through.

Also- What's Bernie playing today?

Ys III on PCE is amazing, thats for sure. But honestly, if the Genesis version had come out on Mega/Sega CD, I would say that would be the definitive version of Ys III. It had the great graphics, smooth scrolling, and I love the genesis six button pad. If it had red book audio, it would have been my version of choice.

Though that didn't happen, so the PCE wins hands down for me.
