Sega Pluto on GameGavel
« on: April 22, 2013, 01:35:08 PM »
Saw this coming a mile away: http://www.gamegavel.com/item.cgi?show_item=0000752122

3 days remaining...my guess is a little north of $30k at the end.

Any thoughts on why a seller would list a rarity like this on GameGavel, rather than eBay where it would get far more visibility (and bids)?

If this was a M2 or something hardware wise that never actually made it to retail market in any form I'd care. As is it is not anything really special. Just another Saturn, but in a different shell. It is not going to do anything for you that any normal Saturn cant do already.

Prototypes aren't usually appealing because of their primary function. The mesopotamian pottery in the natural history museum doesn't actually hold water anymore, nobody cares. My issue with this thing is that I'm not convinced its real.

Also, being (apparently) from Sega of America its basically a giant ugly bland black brick. I wonder if it comes equipped with the requisite 1" of dust that completes the look so well.

If I knew it was real and it was actually cool looking I'd pay $1000 for it...which isn't even close to what it's going to fetch. :)

After the recent Aero Fighters 3 fiasco I've become highly suspicious of things turning up out of nowhere. Things never before seen, heard of, announced, etc. I'd really like to see the inside of this. The shell could just be some engineering student's graduation project.

EDIT:

Two more observations...1) what excuse in this day and age is there for photos that shitty? A five year old iPhone takes better picks that that. He's going to get $10k easy for this f*cking thing and he can't even bring a light into the room and use the HQ setting on his camera? And 2) I see that there is a fair bit of "Sega dust" in some shots, which adds some legitimacy to the object. :)

EDIT EDIT: The metadata in the photos indicates the pics were take with a D60 (a very nice $1200 DSLR)!?. Does Game Gavel have some code that "Craigslist-ifies" photos for some reason?

I still can't help but think that this is a really clever ruse. The initial video shows a demi-decent dwelling with a guy claiming to have bought the "Pluto" for $1 not even knowing what it is, this despite the multiple Saturn systems laying around the house indicating that the guy is rather a Saturn fan. Now these pics in the auction look like they were taken in Nintenga's dungeon. Its almost like they were deliberately made more trailer trashy to add credibility to his "Derp de derp, I don't know what this is, duh!" story.

I realize I'm kinda overthinking this but...extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, IMO.

Hahhaha, yes, the lack of clean, quality photos is troubling.

1. Turn on light/lamp
2. Hold camera steady
3. DONE

I find it most funny and strange at the same time, that the owner of that Pluto #1 proto just got alarmed of what he has in his possession after that very recent unveil of the pluto #2 proto from that former sega developer, even he had it at home for over 6 years already and seems to be quite experienced with video games.
what held him back so long to find out what he really had found for only 1 dollar at that flea market 6 years back?

You bring up a pretty compelling case - I did find it nuts to believe that this system would just magically appear almost 20 years after the Saturn's lifecycle ended, with no prior media coverage, rumors or anything, but I figured it was plausible.

It wasn't until the second video popped up with the aforementioned "I found this at a flea market and have no idea what it is even though I have an extensive collection of rare domestic and import consoles" guy that I started to think it might be fake.

But yeah - why game gavel? lower fees maybe?

Perhaps GameGavel because they have less resources to investigate and prosecute for fraud.

Yeah, something like this. They know they'll get less money but that means less coverage, less investigation, and also fewer avenues of recourse if they find it to be fake.

The sad thing is that even if it is fake we'll probably never know. Whatever Big Tymer buys it will never open it, and if he does and it turns out fake, he'll never tell us because 1) he doesn't want to look like a tool and 2) he doesn't want it to lose value.

There were six fake copies of Aero Fighters 3 sold. They rubes all paid between the minimum of at least $2000 to the maximum of $30,000 and only one of these guys has asked for his money back that I know of.

What are the Assembler a$$holes saying about this thing? They might have an interesting take.

I wonder if game gavel approaches people with high profile stuff to see if they'll sell on there to direct more traffic to their site?
I wouldn't be surprised.

The guy with Pluto 2 is saying on the ASSembler forum that he plans to open his and take pics. This should be interesting. I'm %90 certain every thing about it is standard Saturn except for the modem and however it interfaces (if it even does interface) but it would be really cool if there was something else in there, like 4MB of extra RAM.

Did this ever happen?  I don't really go on Assemblers, so I am counting on you for an update.

The 4MB of RAM is unlikely, but would be really awesome.
