New Mod idea for Turbo Grafx/CD
« on: March 15, 2006, 07:51:37 PM »
Hey everyone :)
I have been thinking lately about all the hype with HTPC's(Home theater Pc)
After looking at some of the cases, they seem to provide a world of possibilities.
I know that some will probably hate my idea since the finished product won't be visually recognizable as an NEC unit, but here goes:

I wanted to take a slim-line htpc case and stuff the guts of a TG-16 and CD
unit inside of it along with modding it to output S-Video/RGB/Composite, and
of course the region mod. Another possibility was a small Vacuum-Flourescent LCD with a stand-alone programmable controller to provide a high tech looking display that would denote if the HuCard or CD was being used in an alpha-numeric fashion as well as fan speed and voltage.
Next was gutting the CD unit itself and transforming it to a newer slide out type as seen with the original PS2.
Next on the list was taking a turbo tap and trying to seamlessly (I hope) incorporate it into the front panel. Here I am presented with another option, which is whether or not to convert the pinouts to a PC Engine type.
If this is done, then controllers are still easily available as well as the use of japanese accessories and the new classics converter they now have at TZD.

I would really appreciate any thoughts and input on this. I plan to start the project in the next 2-3 weeks when I get the time.

^_^

I think that no one here would want to see a system gutted like that.  Unless you are a top notch gifted individual with exceptional electronic skills.   Modding systems is kinds dangerous because they are getting more expensive.  Im hoping messiah brings out new hardware like they did the generation NEX.  That would awesome.   But hey good luck.  I think you should stay with the top loading CD style (a la playstation one)  it works and you have less things to worry about breaking down.

I do have a BA in Electronics Engineering, but I fully agree with you that they are becoming more scarce and pricey. I suppose the purpose of asking for opinions and input, was to see what everyone (or a majority) would like to see. I think that just because a system is old doesn't mean it has to look it :)
This was just a way of trying to contribute to the Turbo community in the only small way I know how.

I think it's a decent idea.  I've always dreamt of having a "Turbo" console that could play all formats (US HuCard, JPN HuCard, CD, SCD, ACD, SuperGrafx, etc.) along with a built in TurboTap.  Having an all-in-one unit like that would be fantastic.  I wonder how complicated it would be to build it from scratch.
Games I Need: Bonk 3 (HuCard), Legend of Hero Tonma, Magical Chase, Soldier Blade, Super Air Zonk.

Got one to sell? PM me!

A built-in TurboTap is a bad idea.

Because there are some games that are designed for one player that mess up when the Tap is in place (like China Warrior). On a related note, there are also some games that mess up bigtime when a six-button controller is used (like Bomberman).

maybe you could have a turbo tap built-in and a normal one-controller port above that with a switch so you could select 1 player or multi-player.
Either way, this project sounds like a crazy amount of work.
I liked the idea someone had of putting a Hucard port and/or CD-rom drive inside a PC-FX.

I'd love to try my idea with a PC-FX shell. Don't have one presently though.
I appreciate the Ideas though, keep coming with the suggestions! I will definitely take pictures as I progress. Also thanks for letting me know about the turbotap thing, I wonder why that would mess up a game though...
Thank you all for your comments.

i don't know, but it doesn't surprise me that turbo taps and 6 button pads cause some problems.  using a Genesis pad on my SMS works fine with 95% of my games but it messes things up with a few of them.

the idea sounds cool, but to be honest it's hard to image what it would look like when you really don't know. maybe posting a sample drawing of your idea or something of that sort would illicit more of a responce.

The Tap thing I imagine had to do with how input was handled in earlier games. I can only theorize that coders didn't know how to handle the polling time properly. The six button issue is a funny one...to represent the four additional buttons, the D-pad is sent back as all four directions pushed at once. :) Imagine what this would do to games that aren't expecting that and don't know how to handle it...

It sounds like a pretty neat idea, go for it if you want to!

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).
