Genpei Toumaden
« on: May 23, 2013, 01:44:50 PM »
I just put Namco Museum Volume 4 on my PSP and have been playing the hell out of this game.  It's frustrating at times, but I really enjoy the music, artwork, and even the somewhat-derpy character sprite animation (is that hardware rotation I'm seeing on the arms/sword??)

Does the PC Engine version compare well to its arcade counterpart?  It's a pretty inexpensive game & I'm curious as to why that is.  I've seen far worse games go for higher prices.

I think it does fairly well on the pce for what it is.
And yeah, the arcade prob. used hw rotations, whilst the pce using still good looking animations.

I love Assault! I have the marquee from an old cabinet because I was going (will eventually...) make an "illuminated marquee display box" and Assault was mandatory. As was Joust. And MegaZone (but I couldn't find one at the time). And Rush-N-Attack. Ahhhhh....

Don't forget that I have a loosie with manual of this game for sale here if anyone is interested.

Note:  It did come from Bernie, so be forewarned of the Bernie curse.

I hadn't considered Kannoni because I thought Kagekiyo's jump animation was a bit silly, and it seems to be a bit more expensive than the first one, but upon further investigation, I've decided I wouldn't mind having it either.

The thought just occured to me...the art style & animation of these games almost reminds me of the cutout animations in Monty Python.

Ha! Yes, that's 100% spot on...the animation really does look/feel like that (run, then parry, run in Samurai Ghost for a good example of the "awkwardness" inherent in the design/implementation).

Anyway, the sequel (Sammy the Ghost) is far more captivating to me than the first game. FAR MORE CAPTIVATING.

With unbridled enthusiasm, Hany bellows, "Genpei Tomaten Cannoli...now!"

pce version is surprisingly quite close to the arcade considering I feel namcot did some pretty shitty ports to the pce especially later on in years.

btw there are some cool music tracks in both games especially if you unlock the hidden music screen.
