Game not working

Hello all,

I am a newb around these parts but I am hoping I could get some help. I bought a copy of Bonks Adventure but it is not running. When I turn the system on all I get is a yellow screen. I can probably try to get a refund from the seller but I thought I would see if it is a fixable thing. I searched around the forum and did what everyone recommended for glitches like cleaning the card slot and it did not help but it did make some of my other games run a lot better. Thanks.

Well if that's your only game you really need a second game to figure out where your problem is. It's more likely the system is at fault but you really need another hu card to try out. Also try pushing the hu card in all the way then pulling it back out to the point where power lock hits the top of the card. One of my systems will not play any games if the card is pushed in all the way.

Try cleaning the contacts as well.  Use one those wedge type pink erasers.

You can infer US likely, he would've used "PC Genjin" if it was a Japanese HuCard (not Bonk's Adventure).

Anyway, I'm guessing your other games that work are US too (you're using a TG-16, right?), so if that's the case, you might just have a bad HuCard here. They do break... E.g. The TurboExpress I bought in the 90's had very tight contact pins out-of-the-box, and sadly, the first HuCard I tried was "Bloody Wolf" and it wound up breaking it. Really had to force it in the first time and then it wouldn't load, so I'd pull it out and keep trying until finally giving up. Then I tried another HuCard and it worked, which led to an 'uh-oh' moment realizing that there was now a problem with the HuCard itself, and not the unit... So I tried loading it on my TG-16 system, and nothing (I had zero problems with it on my TG-16 before this mishap)... Thus the initial, excess tightness of the contact pins had destroyed it... The End.

Well, if you cleaned the contact brass really well and all the other HuCards work, chances are you bought a bad one... Although, sounds like you got a flaky unit or something, saying that your other games "run a lot better" after cleaning the card slot, so I'm not certain either way. Do you mean they now load instantly, the first time, without having to reinsert the HuCard repeatedly to eventually get it to load ??

if other methods are not working, you can do what always works for me, use some light steel wool on the contacts of the hu-card.
you can also use a very light grit sandpaper for the pins in the cart slot.

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I got the system from bernie so its not the system I think I just have a borked card. Not a big deal it was dirt cheap but I will try the other tips on it like pulling it slight out and steel wool (I had already tried the pencil eraser). It just sucks cause I really wanted to give the game a try. Anyway I have other games to play so not a big issue.

Do what I did with a broken PC Kid 2 - turn it into a keyring

I like to use rubbing alcohol and an old toothbrush to clean Hu cards.

Oh, ok.  I klnow who ya are now.    Yeah, it certainly is not the system then.  Both the units were worked on by Keith Courage, and I never had any issues with any HuCARD games.  So, it most likely is the game itself, which appears to be happening a lot recently..  Seems I remember a few other issues with bad HuCARDs.  I've never actually experienced one going bad, but it may have something to do with how the game is stored, treated, ect..

Pencil eraser ?? You tried cleaning the brass contacts with a pencil eraser ?? Uh, never heard that one before, don't think I'd recommend it either... But yeah, making them nice and shiny with something like steel wool is certainly worth a shot.

Cleaning contacts with an eraser is dead common; they work fine for minor corrosion.

Yeah NW, I use those pink wedge type erasers, and it has worked wonder on ALL my HuCARD games, and SNES, NES, ect.. carts.  Gets em all nice n shiny again.

It seems counter-intuitive to me, not something I would've thought of certainly, but I'll take your word for it. To get metal all shiny and new-looking again, sand paper, steel wool, wire brush wheel, etc. is typically the way to go (not that I would use sand paper or a wire wheel in this case). Using light steel wool still carries some risk, you just gotta be gentle with it, obvious no-brainer, enough force to where the brass is starting to shine again but not so much to where you might cause damage or remove more layer of metal than you should, etc. I'll have to try the eraser idea some time to see how it works.
