Hellfire S
« on: May 30, 2013, 01:49:21 PM »
I'm surprised there isn't already a thread on this game (there might be and I just couldn't find it.) Any who:

I had the itch to play a shooter this eventing so I broke out the Duo and really sat down and played this for the first time. Man is it awesome. I really like the ability to change direction of the shot and how valuable it is to your progression in the game. I didn't get very far but the levels seem nice and the music is ace. I'll be playing this one some more for sure.

What does everyone else think of this one?

This was the second (and last!) PCE game I imported bitd.  The first was Spriggan.

I love this game!  It quickly becomes hard as nails though.  I remember even back then I never could beat it, and now I'm not nearly as good at it.

But it's a great looking game.  The gameplay mechanics are solid.  The cutscenes.... When I first got this, it blew me away!  And the music is catchy as well!  It's not shmuppy-perfection like some other games for the console, but it gets so much right that I consider it a classic for the system.  It crushes the Genesis version, much like so many other PCE ports.

a great game although I wish since it was on CD-rom they could have done some layered scrolling.  I remember enjoying the 2 player too but there is some flicker and slow down in that.  Loved the cut scenes and music

I like shooters, and especially PCE shooters, but I didn't like this one. I found the weapon mechanic a little difficult to deal with and wasn't happy with the enemy patterns, level design, or control feel. Just not quite right for me.

Great game.  My friend and I played it all the way through and beat it 3-4 months ago.  It is interesting how (in my opinion) the 4-way diagonal shot is usually the most useful weapon.  I rated it as a '7' out of 10 on PCE Daisakusen! after beating it, but the more that I think about it, the more I want to bump my rating up to an 8 or a 9.

Isn't there some parallax later in the game?  I thought for sure there was maybe a level or 2 later on with some layers...

PCE Hellfire is missing the parrallax, but it's closer to the arcade original.  MD Hellfire is weird, they created new sprites for the game and added that laser attack, none of which was in the arcade game.
