Need Tg-16/Pc-Engine info on the 16-bit wars...
« on: May 30, 2013, 09:15:06 PM »
I'm going to write an article for a new page concerning the 16-bit wars. As you know, it was one of the greatest generations of systems known to man. From years, most articles of such theme have focused on the Snes vs. Genesis, and left the Turbografx in the dust. I want to include it as well, doing an homage (is that the word?) to what was such a unique and wonderful system. I know more or less how it went in the Usa and  Europe, but I have a problem with Japan. The PC-Engine went on to win second place there, but that's pretty much what I know of the matter. From messages I've read here and there it seems it had a pretty long and plentiful life (1987-1997?) but I need help from you. How much units did it sell there? How was the general feel of the 16-bit wars there? Thanks in advance.

PS: Didn't know which forum to post this in. If the moderator considers it necessary, move the topic accordingly.

There are no solid sales numbers. The ones that do get tossed around (11 million), may not include all models.

Early on in North America, the TG-16 had more games and it seemed to be taking the lead until the Genesis suddenly surged ahead, while the Turbo brand continued on slow and steady. People today who didn't experience the 16-bit generation from day one seem to describe the TG-16 as DOA and the Genesis as an instant success. In reality it took a while for the Genesis to become competition for the NES and it wasn't until after the point when it finally pulled away from the TG-16.

The Turbo brand also never died out prematurely. It just wasn't as super commercially successful as the Genesis and SNES. But it did go the distance.
