Turbo seasonal fun
« on: June 10, 2013, 12:37:32 AM »
Something I posted earlier gave me the idea for this thread. With all my systems, there's games I like to play in a determined season of the year. For the TG-16, I really like to play Legendary Axe when summer is near/has arrived. The lush jungle environment and tribal rhytms are truly designed to be played when sun is shining imo. Another good example is JJ & Jeff. Although it doesn't have quite as tropical environment, I like to play it at this time of the year.

Does this happen to any of you?

I really can't figure out how you guys plan your "gaming schedule"... I usually play random games in no particular order.

Sometimes I feel like that.

I feel more like playing Bonk, Bomberman, Star Parodier during the summer, Dracula X, Splatterhouse during the fall, Got and Cotton during the winter.
Gaming since 1985

Yes, this definitely happens to me (with many things, like music, books, etc.).

Often, but not always, a game is associated with a particular season based on when I originally played the heck out of it.

SPRING = KABOOM! Pitfall, Castlevania III, Archon, Wasteland, Ninja Gaiden (NES)...Legend of Hero Tonma, Karnov...

SUMMER = sweaty, slimy controller, no AC, salty-sting-in-the-eyes, did I mention NO AIR-CONDITIONING? beads of sweat rolling down my back and brow, short, cropped hair soaked with brine...Tiger Heli, Gyruss, Iron Tank, Baseball Stars, Top Gun, Stinger (NES), etc.

Later, for TG-16: Sinistron, Monster Lair, CyberCore, Dragon Spirit, Raiden, MotoRoader. These were the games I played and replayed in the miserable NJ summers. A weak fan provided the only relief from the heat and humidity.

WINTER = wearing hats and parkas inside house. Permanent-frost fingertips, nose, ears. DID YOU SPOT THE TREND? No AC in summers, barely any heat in winters. Cadash, Ys I & II, Bomberman, Faxanadu, Zelda, Neutopia(s), Bomberman '93 (we melted and froze), Military Madness, Dr. Mario.

Ha! We do that, of course, but when a certain season hits, we gravitate to certain games that we haven't played in a while...

Usually if I watch a movie like Indiana Jones, I may play games like Y'S, or where you have to solve puzzles. But mostly I just grab a game and start playing. Season really do not have anything to do with my decisions.

Seconded. It always tends to be a random game that I'm in the mood for.  Although some games tend to be in more often, like Aero Blasters or a nice list of other shooters.
All is well. :)

This is correct. Adventure Island games were made for summer. Alex Kidd too. And NES Bump 'n Jump!

(Oops! Don't kill me for mentioning non-Turbo stuff!)

Hmmm, I don't know about specific games, but I find that I like to play bright, sunny, colorful games during the summer, while darker, more depressing games have to be saved for the colder months. I can play a summer-y game at any time of year, but the effect is so much nicer when the weather outside matches. Winter-y games in summer kind of sour my mood, though. I don't want to be looking at something all brown and grey then.

But there are plenty of games that are fairly neutral and I wouldn't say really belong to one group or the other.

95% of my Turbo gaming happens in winter. I live in MN and take advantage of the nice weather when we get it. Hibernate and play video games in the winter. Typically I play shooters when I play turbo/pc engine since there are so many I have not played.

Thirded(ed?)

I've usually done the same thing, just grabbing what I'm in the mood for.  However, I have played some turbob that reminds me of specific seasons.  Beyond Shadowgate makes me feel like Fall is outside, Ys book I&II and GoT reminds me of Summer time (Cause I picked up my Duo with those games in the summer time).  Ys IV and Riot Zone totally remind me of Xmas/winter time as I opened them both on Xmas morning.  :)

I might have to start doing annual play throughs during some of these seasons.  Good ideas!
