EGM TurboGrafx-16 preview from summer 1989
« on: July 04, 2013, 03:19:08 AM »
I don't think the entire preview of TurboGrafx-16 from Electronic Gaming Monthly #2 (June/July 1989) ever got posted.

So here it is, along with a few relevant pages.

Such a hope filled preview.  It seems funny to read it knowing what happened afterward.  I think it's also kind of funny that they mention not having Space Harrier and Shinobi since both games came out on the system in Japan.

I still have this issue of EGM, it was the only one that survived my parents throwing all my game magazines in the dumpster while I was off at college, haha.

I had an EGM with a CES report thing from 1993 (I believe) that had a ton of Turbo CD games that ended up never coming out.  I can't remember all of the games, but it claimed that Loddoss war and Gradius 2 and a few other games were slated for coming over.  I looked through all of my old magazines a few years ago but couldn't find it.  I'll look again next time I'm at my parents and if I find it I'll be sure to scan it/post it.

I actually went to Summer CES 1993 and Summer CES 1994 in Chicago.

I clearly remember playing Rayxanber III at the 1993 show.  You're right there were indeed a number of Super CD-ROM / Duo games there that never made it stateside,
though most of them I just cannot remember.  Forgotten Worlds may have been there too. The only one I'm 100% certain of is Rayxanber III.

Question #1 - What is this Namco system of which they speak?

Question #2 - Why did EGM love Deep Blue?

EGM, like many magazines, or at times individuals working at game mags, loved to just straight up lie about stuff to appear "hardcore" and having an inside scoop. So often early preview descriptions and impressions are complete bullshit.

Too bad Nintendo was an ass and basically forced producers to work only on their line of game consoles. NEC got the short end of the stick except for Japan where they launched before everyone else.

Also I feel that TTi would last way longer on US if they managed to do a DUO unit with SUPERGrafx capabilities. I don't doubt that they could at least get close to outsell the Genesis, specially with all the new developers they (briefly) attracted with the new Super CDROM2 addon. (EA, Lucas Arts, Maxis, Spectrum Holobyte, Psygnosis, and others...)

And a Namco SuperGrafx 16 DUO with Arcade CDROM would be neat to see hehe.

Wouldn't have changed a bit.

The DUO was powerful and unique enough to differentiate itself from any other systems at that time.
If marketings fails, not the right games were ported, budget is insufficent and blind tasteless peeps are being in the majority, then a system like a TG16 must fail.

They probably already used 30% of their budget to disimprove all the game covers.
