NYC Suggestions
« on: July 14, 2013, 05:09:03 AM »
My gf gave me the green light to come to NYC and see the MLB All Star Game.  I am staying with a friend in LI and making the daily commute into the city.

My gf stayed at our apartment and didn't come along for the trip so I have Mon afternoon to wander the city by myself.  I used to live here...  but that was 5 years ago.  Any suggestions on how to kill time that day?  Preferably a good lunch spot that did not exist 5 years ago I won't be a creep at by myself.

Esty and TurboCro still work in the city everyday (I think), they might be the best to ask.  I am a creature of habit -when in Manhattan and always go to 2nd ave deli.

BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere.

yeah, i've spent enough time in NYC to know that in 'n out is the best route to take.
if you've got time, enjoy the stuff outside the city, try going to the beach.

in essence, ignore people, they suck; nature is better.

Love going to NYC once every couple of years, but good god - I can't get out of that place for less than a grand a weekend. Even McDonald's for two is like a $20 affair.

If you find yourself on Canal - I love this place even though it's a dingy tourist trap:

If you get there early enough for breakfast/brunch, this place is the size of a closet but the French Toast is the truth. You can totally eat here solo and not look like a weirdo (there's only like 3 tables and a rail anyway):

There's the per-requisite retro shops (VG New York, etc.). They're fun to go check out but overpriced as all hell for the most part.

I went to the 2nd ave diner yesterday if that was Katz.  Not bad, but $20 pastrami is pretty outrageous lol

Cigar Inn was a place we went yesterday I had never been.  It was damn good, highly recommended for anyone that likes that sort of thing.

Today it is Film Forum and some Cuban food, then I meet my friends and they will drag me where ever.

Maybe since I used to live here I have more of an affinity for the place...  you guys all hate NYC lol.  I will be happy to get home in 2 days though for these reasons:  A.)  NYC is expensive.  Having fun costs a lotta money.  B.)  Sex!

NO hate for the city here: of course I can go in and out anytime I want, Living in NJ.

Expensive, well, yeah it is.  I've unfourtantly got use to it around here.  $10 lunch is cheap for one person.

Haven't been there myself, but a friend of mine lives in Astoria. He's hit this place up and had a blast:

I went there a few years with some friends. We ate at Planet Hollywood. The rest of the trip was a waste of time and money. I don't understand why so many people like NYC.

Don't get me wrong - I love NYC. There so much crap to do there it's overwhelming some times. My only thing is that for the price of a 4 day trip to NYC with hotel and food and incidentals, I could go to the Caribbean (or a number of other places) for a week. During the Wisconsin winters the Caribbean is going to win out every time.

If you have someone to stay with for free who knows the city well, that's a totally different story. Unfortunately most of my friends from college who moved to NYC now live elsewhere because of marriage/kids.
