Here'[s something I forgot to mention: YOU CAN JUMP IN THIS GAME!  You can even jump over fences!  Just about every other top-down RPG-ish game on 4th gen consoles doesn't let you do this, but Magicoal does, and it's pretty awesome.  Great feature!

I never finished this game (I don't use guides/FAQs), but I intend to conquer it one day. I skimmed your post because I didn't want to spoil anything... But the only thing I would add is that I thought that the Red Book music nicely complimented the game.

Now I am in the mood to pull out Legend of Valkyrie, too.

The only 'spoiler' in that post is for that one puzzle multiple people have gotten stuck on quite early in the game.  The rest is just a description of issues, and things I like, about the game.

Black Falcon - thanks so much for posting your findings. I got stuck in the burning village years ago. Now I have a reason to play the game again.

The only thing to note is that if you don't have the key, make sure you've done everything else in the village.  The game is fairly straightforward, though -- events happen when you get near them or bump in to people, etc, so that shouldn't be a problem.

As far as the MB128, I've experienced the same problem (posted here). I suppose it just doesn't work with Magicoal, period. At least I can still use it as a giant Tennokoe Bank with the editors on other games.

Bah, I missed that... the game has a MB128 logo on the cover, it should work!  NEC's shoddy quality control strikes again, clearly.  This, Monster Maker... they needed to do full bug-fixing before shipping games!  The games are good, but would be better without these problems.

If you appreciate that, you should try Fray CD, another RPG'ish-looking overhead shooter.

Shooter?  Magicoal isn't really a shooter... you  do have some projectile magic, but the game has too much exploration, basic puzzle-solving, town parts, etc. to be a shooter.  It's really an action-adventure game, more like a Secret of Mana than Fray CD... though different from either.

As for Fray, I've played a little of that; looks like a non-autoscrolling shmup to me, really.  I actually have the (Japan-only) Game Gear Fray game, and that's basically a non-autoscrolling shmup.

Thanks for posting your findings!  This gives me reason to pop that game back in and give it another go.  Awesome!  I loved the little bit I played of it. :)

I
Not sure of it's the same boss you're talking about but I got stuck at some point in the game were I couldn't beat a boss, so much so that I gave up definitely. Maybe I should try again.

if I remember correctly, the final boss fight's background was made of stars/galaxies and the boss was shooting GOT second boss' style  lasers, but it was some years and blunts ago...

Nope

I found a video of the last part of the walkthrough:

http://nicoviewer.net/sm437647

My memory isn't so bad, exept for the lasers which actually were homing fireballs.
That last boss was really hard, i really"shit rounds of hats" to beat it, i don't think i could do it again today.

I like Shemp, even if he's not as loved as L., C. or M.

What would you call it?  Shmup/RPG?  Run & gun/RPG?  Just an Action-RPG?  Maybe it's the latter, but it's more of a straightforward action game than most action-RPGs for sure... it looks kind of like Legend of the Valkyrie except with RPG towns and more linear levels, and I kind of think of that game as being a run & gun pretty much (with platform jumping sometimes).

Oh, and the Fray game for Game Gear really is a shmup in which you can choose to stop moving forward.  It's simpler than the TCD game.

I would say that Fray is an Action Run-'n-Gun with RPG elements.

I know this is an old thread but I just got this in the post and quite enjoying it although it has moment where it's quite frustrating.  I also encountered that memory 128 bug so I've had to copy a save file into the base ram unit.

From what I can gather Rhun gets spells from either finding them by searching items, treasure chests or beating bosses to beating bosses in a certain way and from scrolls he finds and even from buying from shops and sellers.  These scrolls seem to be random in obtaining spells.  Some drain all your mana away while others will refill it or give you a complete new spell to even giving you nothing!

Melvy can obtain spells from talking to spirits or fairies if you see them floating around then switch to her.  also she just like Rhun can obtain spells from boss fights, searching places and treasure chests etc.

If you find that one of the 2nd characters acting stupid and you want to move along press bother button I & II and that forces them to follow you.

Third, the magic...  okay, so you have various spells.  Your two characters each can cast a different selection of magic, and you'll get more during the game.  Simple enough.  But sometimes I can't use some spells, and I don't know why!  Is there some magic meter I can't see (or recognize) which determines when I can use spells?  Because like, why could I use the fire shield for some time but not the magic-ball shot?  I don't get it at all.  If there's some kind of meter, it should actually make it clear where it is.  I think some kinds of item fixed this, but I'm not sure why.  I imagine the language barrier is the biggest problem here, but it is unclear, there's nothing I could see that clearly states why the magic wasn't working...

There a mana bar in the form of a blue orb under each characters name.  As you use more magic attacks the blue mana depletes and turns red which I assume is when your mana is depleted.  Thankfully if you can stand still both your HP bar and Mana fills back up.

Rhun's shield spells will not work with certain spells so you may have to play around and see which ones work together.

It also looks like Melvy's base element is water but you can change this so she can use other spells.  I not sure when or how you get this spell but there is one that looks like a colored bangle which you have to equip and while pressing down the attack button will charge up a rotating element icon above melvy's head.  Here you have to try and time the right element that corresponds with the magic attack. So if you want to use fire magic on Melvy then you need to make sure she is imbued with the element of fire.  You will probably have to do this every time the game loads into a new area.

Man, what a great tip.  That's so much better than swapping characters or stripping one character of spells so they won't stop and attack.
