Finally got a TG-16 again!! need some advice...
« on: September 28, 2013, 04:58:16 PM »
Finally got my second TG-16 after many years and managed to score
the cd base and hardshell case with it for $100

Was incredibly nervous powering it up as I discovered it had a plastic burn mark (Like
someone left a hot soldering iron on top)

VOILA! Double Dungeons! YAY!

I also noticed a slightly longer delay from my friends TG-16 (On the order of a half second) and was
wondering if this is a symptom of the caps deterioration or just differences in one model to the next.

Unfortunately, the 2 turbo pads didn't work, one was missing the metal end and the other's
D-pad was beyond repair (stripped screws in case and bad wiring) After trying for about
an hour to make 1 good one out of both of them I  pulled a hulk and threw away the
wires.... #-o

I dont suppose anybody is selling the wire harness, is there? I'd love to have a controller
with a longer reach.

I'm also missing the power brick, which a search turned up this:

http://www.retrogamecave.com/nec-ac_adapter.html

Since I never had the cd-base or the cd-rom itself, can i use it without the cd-rom?

One final question: The hard clamshell case i have is missing the buckles that keep it closed. Is it even
worth it to offer it up for trade/sale?

Thanks for your time!

Yes, you can use the CD power supply without the CD drive, and that is the power supply you need.  Or at least, it's a third-party reproduction of the power supply; actual Turbografx and Turbo CD power supplies have the brick in the middle, instead of on the plug, which is pretty awesome (brick-on-the-plug is annoying!), but it'd cost you a lot more than that one would, for sure.  Either way, the power supply will power both the Turbografx and the base unit+CD drive.  The lower power switch (on the base unit) turns on the base unit and CD drive, and the upper switch turns on the Turbografx, but since it gets power through the base unit, it'll only turn on if the base unit is on too.

Even without a CD drive (get a fixed one sometime down the road...), the base unit is great to have because it gives you saving (the save chip is in the base unit) and A/V output instead of just RF.

VOILA! Double Dungeons! YAY!

Another fan! Sometimes it seems like I'm the only one.
I am bad and that's good. I will never be good and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

There is a small but appreciative bunch of folks who dig Double Dungeons (myself included).

I like old-skool D&D/AD&D, so I don't mind the straight-forward approach. I was fortunate enough to play this CO-OP with my brothers BITD. We were also poor, so we milked every ounce of entertainment we could from stuff....

2 players encountering each other in CO-OP is kool (you never get to see what your character looks like, except for an occasional mirror(?) maybe).

Some of the tunes are nice, too. I wish there were more of them.

The tunes in this game were one of its many charms. DD helped me really unwind back in the day. I'd come home stressed out, power it up and somewhere in there my brain would shutoff and unwind in the whole dungeon-crawling. There's definetly some Zen-ness going on...

It would probably be best to get a Duo/PC-Engine Tap modified with a TG-16 plug to go into the console. This way you get the better Japanese consoles/US Duo controllers that are easier to find as well. The big Din plug for the TG-16 controllers tend to break easily around the metal part.

Definitely get a CD add-on for the game saves and AV output, even one with a dead disc drive is worth it and could possibly be a somewhat easy fix. Turbo Booster Plus is another option, but seems a little silly for the money unless you are a collector.

Another option is to S-video and AV mod the TG-16 for around $40-50. The video quality is amazing. Region modding is nice as well, but I find it is just better to get a Japanese console if you get serious about buying Japanese HuCards.

Yes!!  It is the ultimate mindless game to unwind to.  And I love the music.

THUS IT IS AGREED: Older games occasionally retain some entertainment value.
