time to build me a new PC, but what do i need....
« on: October 28, 2013, 04:42:08 AM »
well, i recently came into possession of a free motherboard and case for a desktop PC.
a smidge old, but i can make it work for a decent gaming pc and a small sum of money.
but sadly, i'm a bit out of the loop on this, as the last time i built a pc was about 8 years ago.
so, i've got this motherboard:
http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=H61M-HVS

i was thinking about getting this little deal off newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1448261

and a hard drive.

the thing i'm a bit lost on is what i need for a video card and power supply.
any help here?
also, am i an idiot and not realizing that the cpu i was gonna buy wouldn't work?

"- Supports 3rd and 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 / i5 / i3 / Xeon® / Pentium® / Celeron® in LGA1155 Package"

Also a bit out the loop but I think it will work. I'm not super knowledgeable about the different versions of the core i-series but I think Ivy Bridge is the 2nd or 3rd generation. I'm running a Bloomfield i7 and that's supposedly older

Aside from a harddrive, don't forget the RAM ;)

And a good case/cooling if you're putting a nice GPU in there.

I must say that newegg seems to have pretty nice prices (once I convert those from usd to sek  ) Lucky you guys that can shop from there....

I bought a monster Core i7 CPU for my last build (about 4 months ago). I have to admit, for what I do it's complete overkill.

From what I hear the general rule is to get an i7 if you're doing mathematically taxing stuff (audio, 3D, data crunching) or fall back to an i5 if you're just doing run-of-the-mill.

I'm sure someone in here who is more knowledgeable can chime in.

well i suppose i ought to be a little more specific for what this going to be used for.
basically, this is gonna be my main home pc, so word, excel, etc.
but i was also going to use it to serve as a basic video server to stream stuff between the TVs in my place.

...and gaming of course.  i don't necessarily need anything cutting edge, but something that can at least play some/most of the current gen games without much trouble would be nice.

Ji also makes a good point about cooling.  Don't stick an i7 in your old Pentium III's beige tower. ( :

Haha.
That's exactly what I did  Ran fine with a fanless, low power GeForce card and the i7 stock cooler. Then I bought a used GTX 550 ti and the temps skyrocketed and I had to get a case with better airflow performance and overall cooling options.

Ended up with the Corsair Carbide 300R and though it was one of the cheaper, good cases from the stores I use, the NZXT you mentioned from newegg is even cheaper. Seems like a pretty cool case, actually. But my next build might be a small form gaming PC, not a huger tower...but I digress.

If you want a good cheap power supply, I have seem to have some good luck with kingwin as of late.

As far as video cards go, anything with at least 1GB of GDDR5 should be plenty.

Pretty big fan of PC Perspective's hardware leaderboard. Also I should probably admit I'm an Nvidia whore. AMD has some truly great packages with games right now though. I'd still take the Nvidia hardware over it.

Also - I bought this case and it's flippin' amazing. Full ATX (it's huge), tons of space and really build-friendly on the inside. Fans are all premounted and they're high quality.

I can't seem to find the exact case i've got, but cooling won't be a problem; it's got 5 12mm fans mounted, 2 top, one side, one back, and one bottom, plus the heatsink i've got for the cpu is ridiculous.
