Naming Conventions, Standards, blah, blah
« on: November 30, 2013, 10:20:02 AM »
Ok, this may not be exciting, but I've been working on stuff and was curious about what other folks thought...

(1) Aero Blasters vs AeroBlasters vs Aeroblasters
(2) Shape Shifter vs ShapeShifter vs Shapeshifter
(3) Dead Moon vs DeadMoon vs Deadmoon
(4) Cyber Core vs CyberCore vs Cybercore
(5) Tale Spin vs TaleSpin vs Talespin (Disney helps us here, ha!)
(6) Sim Earth vs SimEarth vs Simeart
(7) Terra Forming vs TerraForming  vs Terraforming (look at fine print on bottom of page; SimEarth is there, too)
(8) Moto Roader vs MotoRoader vs Motoroader
(9) ... What can you come up with? I know I forgot a bunch.

Usually I refer to title screens, and/or cover art, for clarification, but there are often inconsistencies (NA vs JP cover art for Shape Shifter, for example).

Back in the day, NA manuals/magazines were notoriously erroneous, so they aren't the definitive source, sadly.

This problem (inconsistencies) continues with us into the modern internetz (sites scrape info from other sites).

RELATED:

Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (what's the best, most precise way to refer to this damn game?)

Throw an Akumajou in there.

This problem stems from historically new words (using English compounding rules) gradually becoming a part of the language until they transform to German compounding rules.

eg:  Intra net --> intra-net ---> intranet

Or, as another website uses as an example the historical transformation of the word:

fire fly ---> fire-fly  ----> firefly

This happens with most compound nouns and titles over time, especially if the words have a good fit together.

Interesting.

For me, there is an important aesthetic to the title/typography of a game...since TurboGrafx/TurboDuo/HuCARD established a precedent (namely: typography matters!), I'd like to respect the legacy (that said, it saddens me that I can't erase "TurboChip" from our collective minds).

If it were up to me, I would stick with the...

XxxxXxxx

...formula ("IntelligentLink", for example).

But now I'm wondering if TTi ever used "TurboDUO", which means I  am prattling on and on and on...

Ha! I forgot about that...I always keep them together, because it is much kooler.

Thanks for mentioning them, it helps strengthen my convictions

OPEN CALL: All you bastards, help me, at the very least, with CyberCore, MotoRoader. I prefer those titles combined.

Gate of Thunder vs Gates of Thunder
Y's vs Ys

I can't look it up, but I believe that the official name of Drac X is:

Chi no Rondo Akumajou Dracula X

Many game titles often have official printings in all-caps, even when mixed with other games titles which are not.

Yes, and now I'm wondering about:

Armed Formation F vs Armed F vs Farmed Formation (Soy Farm Simulator)
