No Turbo or PC Engine on Shapeways?
« on: December 15, 2013, 06:17:09 AM »
I'm probably the last guy on the planet to hear about this website, but I finally did find out about it.  I excitedly visited the site and punched "Turbografx" into the search.  Nothing.  Nothing?

Why isn't there any TG, PCE, or NEC related stuff uploaded on this website?

No Bonk cufflinks?
No R-Type tie clip?
No PCE console shaped moneyclip?
No NEC emblazoned logo on an iPhone case?
No TurboGrafx-CD replacement gear?
No TurboGrafx replacement cases or clips?

Why?  Why?  Many of you are much more talented that I am.  Many of you have access to AutoCad that I don't.  There's even an Atari 800 computer flash drive uploaded.  Are you telling me there is more demand for an Atari 800 than the entire NEC console collection?

Disappointed?  You bet I was.

Is there anyone that is planning on creating something for this website?  Heck, I'd even take a Soldier Blade ship tree-topper.  Now that would be awesome!  A retro-gaming themed Christmas tree!

I'll be honest: I have no idea what this "shapeways" site is about, but I suspect it is a gym franchise that caters exclusively to women.

I'm not the last one on the train?

Shapeways makes 3D printing available to everyone.  Upload something and they print it out.  People like your design and the next thing you know you are selling them online.  Shapeways takes a cut and you make $$$.  There are thousands of designs, but no Turbob!

Frankly I had no idea about that site. Is it possible to make replacement parts (cd gear, hucard tray door, etc.)? Will they be reliable enough?

I haven't read any reviews on the site, but based off some of the stuff I've browsed through you can make anything and people have.  Here is the PBS documentary I saw that first led me to the website;

There are also a few videos on the Shapeways website that explain how it works.  It appears you can order 3D printed stuff made out of different materials as well.  They list smooth, and gritty, and metals and all sorts of stuff.  I think the stuff is solid.  They have camera mounts for remote controlled helicopters and all sorts of things like that.

I personally think this would be the perfect venue for creating a replacement gear or building the hu card cases/clips we've all been patiently waiting for.  At least a trial run of something.

I'd love to see what some of the artists here could come up with.

This is one of the venues for the replacment door project.  If we can get a good model and prototype this may be one of the ways I try to offer it.  Still lots of variables at the moment. 1 being that pesky flimsy pin they put on them.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)

BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere.

You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

I couldn't find it.  Tried "Turbo", "Turbo Ever", and "Everdrive" and nothing came up in a search.

Funny about this......I just recently purchased a 3D printer and am looking to offer Turbo-related creations :)  I have a few things in mind myself, but if anyone out there has 3D modeling ability I'm open to printing out your creations for sale!

Details needed, please.
Which one did you get? ABS or PLA? Any mods yet? (DO use a glass plate). How hard is it to keep calibrated? What modeling software / slicer / firmware?

I've been using a Soldoodle (no link. google it) to do various pieces, and it's a temperamental machine at times; some times perfect prints, other times not so. But I hear that's par for the course when you are trying for something really nice.

First on my list would be the bonk-head stick topper. I'm sure that will be seconded shortly.
Second is a replacement controller casing. For those cases with stripped out / broken screw posts.
Heck, while we're at it, how about a whole new controller, with microswitches instead of those rubber pads :)

And for those folks who want to use shapeways....Check their prices. Our quote was $50 each for a 6x6 replacement cd plate. Which takes about 4 hours and $1 worth of ABS to print. It probably looks a nicer than our prints, but $50....Not that nice.
