Bootleg Sapphire comparison
« on: April 19, 2006, 03:12:01 PM »
Alright, I finally got my fake Sapphire and have started scanning it and the real deal in.

I've got the main roll-over comparisons up on a simple page for now-

http://www.superpcenginegrafx.com/sapphirecomp.html

I'll have the rest of the manual scanned in and have a lot of detail info about the bootleg and the differences and the easiest things to spot when its done.

I had thought that even with a comparison that it would be too hard to tell in an auction image if a copy was fake or not, but I've already learned enough to do it pretty easy.

Here's what appears to be an honest seller with one on eBay right now-

http://cgi.ebay.com/PC-Engine-ACD-GINGA-FUKEI-SAPPHIRE-Near-Mint-JAPAN_W0QQitemZ8277700358QQcategoryZ4315QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Like I said, I'll get into details later, but some main points for now-

The fake's case is bright white and totally different than a regular PCE one or any white cases I've ever bought. The plastic looks and feels cheap. It has sharp pointy triangle ridges for the grooves over the hinges instead of flat squarey ones. Also, the fake case has a texture on the cd area, while the real deal is smooth and solid.

The spine and insert are thin and over glossy and noticibly flimsy/bendy like paper , in contrast to the more matte finished sturdy cardboardy originals.

The manual pages however, are extra thick, like sonmay/ever anime type bootlegs. And the inner pages have the worst repro image quality of the item.

As is now common info, the fake has an extended inner ring with a barcode and extra writing on it where as the original has clear plastic in the same area and very little text on it's thin ring.

The manual cover art has lost most of the color seperation and looks darker and blurry. The outfit is all shades of blue where as the original has more distinct shades of purple and the entire cover is paler and sharp/clear.

One of the big giveawys with the cover is the logo. Its very pale and almost fades to white along the middle in the original, but the fake is vibrant purpley-pink to orange to dark yellow while the original is only pale-urine yellow and pale bubblegum pink. Also watch out for the yellow colored parts on the shuttle which are orangey in the fake.

Other grey colored sections on the cover are blue shades in the fake.

And although its hard to spot in photos, all the Arcade card logos are a super bright light orange on the fake, but paler and not flourescent at all on the original. I don't think that this came through in my scans, but I can't really tell since my monitor is dying on me.  :(

Very good work on the comparison details. However, I can't get the image scroll overs to work on Firefox and also had some problems with it on Internet Explorer.

Adding PCE console specific layer on top of that, makes for an interesting challenge (no, not a reference to Ys II).

Thanks.  :D

I contacted hit-japan about the auction, since I figure he's a legit seller and I've bought from him with no problems in the past.

I got this response:

"please do not joke, this one is authentic."

Then I e-mailed him back with a link to my page and he quickly responded with this:

"oh, I thought it was authentic... because I bought it from Japanese
reliable game Shop in Tokyo. I'll stop the auction, thanks for advice."

FYI...

The fake one has writing on the inner-ring that is readable from the bottom side of the disc and says:

IFPI LM46 (tiny letters above CDREO)
* CARE4DATA KEC2CMG924CDREO * 1

The real one does not have the barcode and the writing, which is readable from the top side, says:

HCD5080 -on the middle left

HRH800925-1SAAS -on the middle right

If someone is selling an opened copy and you'll take their word for it, get them to check this. Its the easiest way to tell the difference in an instant.

Yeah, I got the rollovers blocked out by my firewall when I had them set to preload.

Here's a special SUPER Keranu2 System version-

Thanks for the page, but now it appears that the roll overs work for me :P ! The rollovers look really nice and are excellent for comparing, great job.

I slaved away all day today and have finally finished my Sapphire counterfeit section, which now spans several pages-

http://www.superpcenginegrafx.com/sapcomp1.html

Its got everything you'd ever need to know about the differences between the fake and the real thing as well as entire scans of versions.

Wow, that's amazing man. You really outdid yourself with the detail, even showing the differences between the inner CD case. Give yourself a pat on the back for me :) .

Great info Black_Tiger!  I bought one of the bootleg copies and it was obvious that it was different from the original.  I don't own an original, but it was nice to finally be able to see the differences side by side!

I still find it difficult to tell the differences from most of the pics on ebay.  Pull tab and disc's inner ring are the two things I look for myself.

Awesome stuff!

Looks like the one for sale at Super Potato in Akihabara is legit.  Of course they want 35000 yen for it...

Rock on!

This will be an invaluable resource / reference to folks. Folks bidding on Sapphire on ebay should get an anonymous email linking to this page! Just so they don't get taken advantage of :)

It's almost like a super hero or something, messaging someone on eBay this link in disguise to save them from evil.
