NEC CD ROM Reader CDR 35D.... Anyone know what this is?
« on: February 20, 2014, 01:06:30 AM »
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-CD-ROM-Reader-CDR-35D-for-TurboGrafx-16-repair-duo-pc-engine-/131120991322?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e876b8c5a

I've seen this item on Ebay twice now. I assume it's probably part of a development kit or something. Anyone know anything about this unit? Couldn't find anything in the forum about it.

It's half of an Intersect external CD-ROM drive for use with a PC; the other half is the BFU-35 buffer/interface unit.

You´d be disappointed if you´re looking for a direct replacement for the CDROM2 - the CDR-35 doesn´t work with the IFU-30, I can definitely confirm that - I´ve tried to get it to run. It plays music fine (though you can´t access it via PCE/Menu/Buttons), but only if you push buttons directly on it.

I own a working unit, it is internally different in electronics, which you clearly see when you compare them both.

If you´re looking for a spare parts unit, I´d go for it, especially when it´s still fine or hasn´t been tampered with.

Thanks for making this thread!  That auction is mine, but sadly I don't know much about this item.  I purchased a PCE-CD briefcase unit a few years back and the seller threw in a ton of extra stuff including this item.  He told me it was handy to keep around for spare parts, but i'm not too good with repairing electronics so I figured someone else might be able to put it to good use.

If anyone has any questions about it or wants me to test out anything, let me know.

Well, if the laser and the whole sled/spindly unit is fine, I´d give it a go. Have you ever opened it up?

I've never tampered with it, it has stayed inside an antistatic bag in my closet for probably...5 years?

Did you power yours on with an IFU-30's power adaptor, or did you use something else?  Maybe if i could find a proper power source we could see if the lights come on.

I used the IFU as well as the power plug directly. In the IFU it only powers on when you press "Play", you cant boot it up from the console itself...sadly...

I just connected it to my IFU and can confirm that it powers on as you described.  You are correct that it is not a 1:1 replacement for the PCE CD unit as it will not function as one.  If anyone has any other questions about it or wants me to test it in any other way, please let me know.
