Sony Pictures making "Console Wars" movie feat. Nintendo & SEGA (no NEC ??)

It doesn't come out until May 13, so probably not.  The synopsis they give of the book is...... interesting:

So Kalinske and the Genesis slew Nintendo and without them the videogame industry wouldn't exist?  Yep, you're right.  It's gonna be great and anyone that has doubts is clearly a retarded fanboy.

Nah, man. C'mon, you know that's not what I was saying. It's just that everyone's so quick to shit on something before they know a damn thing about it. Not only that, but because the story focuses on Sega's quest to make a dent in Nintendo's empire rather than giving equal time to NEC it's automatically crap. I'm just not a fan of the pessimism is all.

I mean, I could play the same game, if you want: Yep, you're right. Based on a quick synopsis and a press release announcing barely more than the production team, I can guarantee this is going to suck and anybody that thinks otherwise is a delusional idiot.

I'm just trying to be reasonable. A movie about the story of Sega trying to take on Nintendo back in the 80s could be interesting, if for nothing more than pure entertainment value. And if that's the focus, NEC doesn't have to be a huge part of that; especially in the United States, where Sega kicked some ass, and NEC...well...shit the bed.

We can make educated guesses based on the synopsis and the types of movies made by Rogan and Rudin.

So you still haven't read the synopsis or do you think the movie won't follow the book's focus that closely?  If it follows the book (always assuming the synopsis is correct), it'll be about Genny vs. SNES in the 90s.

Quite frankly, that sounds boring as hell.  Who doesn't already know about Sega's marketing tactics of spending big on advertising, going for a more "grown up" persona, embracing 'tude, and what not?  Even if that does turn your crank, how can you swallow the double pill that Sega destroyed Nintendo when they at best broke even (lost by a mile if you include handhelds from the same era) and that they created the videogame market.

So I'm watching The Social Network today for the first time (20 min left to go) just to get some kind of idea of how good or bad 'Console Wars' might be, if it's in good hands or not.  I really don't know much at all about Facebook or its history so I can't tell how accurate The Social Network really is, but they do reference a lot of things so I assume it's pretty accurate.  Seems to be a fairly well made movie, meaning it's not some cheapo documentary or something.

I think it's kinda interesting Sony Pictures is making this movie, Console Wars, just as another part of Sony has had some major success over the last 12 months, announcing PS4, ramping upto launch, the launch itself, sales and, so far, coming out well ahead of the main compeition. Especially with regard to mindshare & goodwill in the beginning of this new console war with Microsoft (and Nintendo).  I don't wanna read into things much as far as Sony makng Console Wars at this particular point in time, I'm just sayin' it's actually kinda cool.

That said, we'll see if it's only going to be about Sega/Nintendo.

Listen, I couldn't possibly care less if this movie sucks or not. I was just trying to be positive about it. Shoulda known better, I guess.

As an aside, the "fanboy" comment I made was sarcasm. I'm here posting regularly on a TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine forum and have for over a decade. I'm as fanboy as it gets. I guess I just forget how cynical these places can be...

As long as the character played by Jim Carrey snorts lines of coke off a Model 1 Genesis, the movie will be worth it.
