Nope, no matter how many times I try to like teh Axe, it just doesn't happen. The terrible collision issues (which could have been easily remedied) are the dealbreaker for me. The music is nice but still sounds like something from an NES game rather than a turbob game. I give them a break because it's an early title, but no breaks given for the gameplay issues. Splatterhouse has the same collision problems, but it shows up less often because there are no breakable items, only enemies... but you still can only ever hit one at once, which is a HUGE flaw. You have to "readjust your strategy" in that game too, and it's annoying as f*ck. The problem in that game really manifests in the giant vagina level, where you need to be able to hit multiples at once.

I agree with The Old Rover about the control in Axe 1, with better control it could have been on the same level as Ninja Spirit and Axe 2, oh, and better character art would have gone a long way in helping it as well. the characters are not colored or shaded right, they or most of them seem very flat, just compare them to Axe 2 to see what I mean.

I wanted early CD games to have awesome in game aesthetics, the 1st two games I got were Valis 2 and Ys 1 & 2, so I was really disappointed in early CD games...in fact, in my little brain, because of that, I thought it was impossible for CD games to have good graphics, something about those flat disk made it impossible for programmers to do so:-)....the next CD game I bought was Rayxanber 2 and thought it was a really nice looking game, so my faith was restored.

I thought Legendary Axe was gonna be kinda generic when I first saw it as a kid.  But I picked it up anyway at some point and loved it!  Great music, a decent challenge, and you gotta love that last boss taking up damn near the whole screen.

Legendary Axe II, OTOH.. I know it's not even really from the same series in Japan, but still.

For me, the only one that comes to mind right now is Space Harrier.  I loved the arcade game so I thought it was a lock, but I was incredibly disappointed with the port.  The voice I remember being particularly bad.

ya agreed, but i think it was better then a lot of other systems, the sms versions was so rough looking... i wonder what system had the best space harrier port.

I only have the SMS version.

Gorgeous, large sprites. But it's ridiculously choppy, and not one continue.

Tbh, only SMS game I've ever beaten is 1CCed Alex Kidd Lost Stars (love that shit).

I got to final boss on Rastan once, and beat Fantasy Zone on PCE. Master system replaced bosses are too tough.

fausette is awesome.

Agreed completely!

I never owned this one but it is on my list. My friend owned it and hated it, but refused to sell it to me. Then sold it to someone else anyway. I was not a happy camper.

I personally felt Legendary Axe 2 was a huge let down. Especially after I learned that it wasn't even suppose to be a sequel. I think the first is one of the best american releases on Hu-Card. I can see the hit detection issues. But it wasn't that bad in my opinion.

I also second Kaze Kiri. Always wanted it and same friend purchased it, but this time begged me to buy it and I refused. You can do a lot with those 2 buttons, but damn does it suck. I remember everything looked the same.

Another one I forgot to mention was Iga Ninden Gaoh (that may be spelled wrong). That came was total crap. One fo the first imports I picked up back in the day and I finished it, but did not enjoy it at all.

MY DISAPPOINTMENTS:
(-2) Strider (ACD). I loved Strider (arcade, Genny). I didn't know about the PCE ACD version until later, after spending a long time exploring the PCE library, reading about it occasionally on PCE forums, etc. I knew the game had been criticized, but I was convinced everyone else was wrong and I would find some enjoyment! Sadly, I was wrong: Strider ACD is totally meh and it's a goddamn SIN that this isn't a GEM in the PCE legacy. DID I MENTION THAT THIS IS AN ARCADE CD?  Oh, to be tormented by the squandered potential here. Trü storie.

seconded.  The ACD version is so upsetting compared to the megadrive classic.  The acd version could have been great but all it ended up being was wasted potential.  I received this game in a giant lot I purchased a few years back but quickly sold it off after giving it a shot.  what a waste.
currently playing:
PCE - Raiden
SNES - Chrono Trigger
DC - Fast Striker

PCE LP

Most of mine have already been covered: Super Air Zonk, Golden Axe, Riot Zone, Cosmic Fantasy 2.

Also, Dungeon Explorer II, believe it or not. Looked so awesome in the '93 Club Duo Catalog, then I bought it and realized it was just like the original, plus really annoying voice acting. Fortunately the game is still good.

DisObey: TMNT2 and Ultima 3 NES, Dragon Warrior 4, Mario Kart 64
STATUS: Try not to barf in your mouth.

I like to slide in vaginas.

...err...

FF9 was OK, I actually beat it but like 7 I never went back to play it after finishing it. Unlike, FF6 I seem to play through like once a year.
I haven't touched FF6 in some time but it's one of my favorites. FF7 gets another playthrough every once in awhile too, as it's also one of my favorites. Something about that general era of Squaresoft games is just great, as Xenogears and Parasite Eve also get the occasional replay.

The first RPG I ever played was Final Fantasy I on NES when I was in elementary school. And it was the game that turned me on to the RPG genre. It was given to me by my cousin who I guess hated it. I still wonder, he must have hated that game so much to give it to me back then when it just came out.

I have played and beat almost every Final Fantasy up through XI. Never beat XI, or XIII.

I personally loved all them through X, except VIII was easily the weakest in the bunch. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 are easily the best titles and it's so hard to choose between them. 3 was the best by far on the NES/Famicom, all the "real" SNES ones were epic, 4, 5, and 6. Obviously 7 is love it or hate it. I personally loved it and feel most feel the same, and it put RPG's on the map in the states. I remember in jr high people talking about That game who only played stuff like Madden and other sports games. It had a great battle system with the customizable materia linking to weapons which opened up so many types of combos. I wish more Final Fantasy games were this customizable.

Final Fantasy IX is easily considered the lost Final Fantasy. It is really under-appreciated and was a great game. I just think a lot of people, including myself couldn't get past the Zidane (the main character), looking so awful. He was like half human, half monkey. But if you stuck it out you realized what a gem that game was. It had a great story.

I actually thought Zidane was kind of a cool concept. Plus, he wasn't a whiny bitch like Squall was. I kept expecting him to turn into a beast under the full moonlight or go Super Saiyan on everyone's ass though.

Slip-n-slide, Rick. Slip-n-slide.

Seriously though, I still can't believe that you beat the trash out of Turrican TG-16. I just can't get anywhere in that turd, even though I finally broke down and watched your videos a year(?) ago.

Oh, I'm sorry, this topic isn't about lame-looking ports that turned out to be EVEN WORSE than you thought possible.
