TurboEverdrive Blues...
« on: March 05, 2014, 03:44:38 PM »
Received my Turbo Everdrive today. It is just a white screen. A very sad white screen. I tried the following...

Formating the Micro SD to FAT 32
Flipping the region switch
Taking the PCE out of the IFU to cut out some power requirements.

I am running a regular PC Engine, with the IFU, but the CD par is being fixed right now. There is a region modification. Any idea on why it is not working, besides its broken, and if there is something to try? I am going to take this everdrive to my buddies later this week. But it's going to be awhile. Curious if this is a common issue with my model, or with region modifications.

Does anyone else run a everdrive on a region modded briefcase setup?

There were issues with the neo pce and some region mods so I wouldn't be too surprised
That said please test on another system if possible

I did hear of some issues with certain region mods.  The region mod that thesteve and BlueBMW and turbokon though seem to not effect it at all.

Yeah the everdrive doesn't work on some region modded systems.  I notice this more so with the pce.  You should at least get the game menu but games won't load.

commenting to confirm what others are saying, this happened to me with my region modded pce as well.  I was using the neo pce cart, but other games are affected too.
currently playing:
PCE - Raiden
SNES - Chrono Trigger
DC - Fast Striker

PCE LP

Duo's and TG16 are fine, it's just the core pc-engine units that seem to have problems at least that's I've have noticed.

ohh man, thats worrisome. I have a Keith Courage modded PC-Duo R, so it should work according to nullity. If you are able to verify that it does indeed work, just not for your console, i may be interested in buying it from you, if you cant get a refund on it

I have never been able to find any rhyme or reason as to why an ever drive does not work correctly with some region mods. I have installed three different kinds of region mods in many different types of systems and the results are never the same as far as a turbo ever drive is concerned.

meaning I might install one kind of region mod in say a turbo grafx 16 and the ever drive works just fine and then I might install the same region mod in someone else's turbo grafx16 and then the ever drive does not work. it seems to be rather hit or miss and doesn't even matter if the region mod is using a circuit based mod or the old 8PDT switch style. meaning it has nothing to do with lack of voltage due to one style of mod or the other.

I can however confirm that the game of you flash card has never shown any problems with any region modded based system.

Turbokon is correct though that you should at least get the game menu from what I've seen even with systems that are faulty with the ever drive. have you tested any other regular games and experienced any other problems besides?

if there is a problem with the region mod you should experience some type of graphical glitches and/or loading problems in real games as well.

Your region mod is top notch. I tried it with 38 English games last night no issues at all. I will take this thing to my buddies and if it doesn't work I will just pick up a loose s video modded pc engine or core grafx.

My ten noe koe bank has a similar issue, but it boots up, and blk screen after hitting run. Am I used it the day before on.an unmodded duo.

Made a little progress...

Didn't have a chance to take it to my friends yet, but it is magically loading up now. I'm not familiar with the turboeverdrive GUI. But it's definitely not functioning properly. So many weird things are happening. And it only boots with the English region switch on.

I'm going to try and get some pics up tomorrow night.

1. I get a regular black screen with gray text. Looks normal I suppose. But sometime the letters are yellow. And there is this gray bar in the bottom of the screen at all times. Like a gray square, and I notice when I hit a direction sometime the square gets larger by turning into a rectangle.

2. I'm getting errors left and right. Sometimes as soon as I hit a button, sometime when I scroll through pages, sometimes not until I select a game.

3. My pages of roms in the title screen are displaying a random number of pages. For example sometimes 0 pages, sometimes 8 pages, sometimes 20 pages. I have about 64MB of roms total on a 2GB SD card. Sometimes when a page loads up chunks of roms are missing. for example

cadash
darius
ninja spirit
blank
blank
blank
blank
blank
yo bro
neutopia

but they are alphabetical.

4. No roms are loading. Sitting on a black screen. My tg16 roms should be good. I got them in a full set from underground-gamer before they shut down. But my PC engine roms I did get from like rom hustler or something. They are all .pce roms.

Do roms need to have a specific extension?

Also, I had to put all my roms in a folder because my SD kept saying they had to be in a folder because I had too many files.

Finally do roms need to be zipped or unzipped? Mine are unzipped right now, in a folder labeled "turbografx 16"

I'm hoping maybe I just have too many roms, or am doing something dumb. I literally just threw roms on this thing, as stoneagegamer sent no instructions like came with my SD2SNES. So I am unsure if I need to upgrade firmware, or do something special to get things running.

Here, try this.  It is my exact Turbo EverDrive folder setup.  https://www.dropbox.com/s/iy75ahaidbnxnfe/Turbo%20EverDrive%28update%203-6-14%29.rar  If you want to join the share folder, send me a PM.

with my testing on systems that do not work well with the ever drive there is a way around it.

the first would be to load the ROM to the ever drive using a different system. Then put the ever drive back in the region modded console and start the game by using the Select button.

another option would be to load just one game to the flash cart itself. I'm not sure if there is a way to use the ever drive with just one game by loading it to the cart via a USB cable or not but if there is then this would also take care of the problem.

basically the issue is somehow csus when loading a game from an SD card in the region modded system. If the game is already loaded to the flash card from the SD card via another system or straight to the cart: itself without the SD card then there is no problem at all.

this is why the game of you flash card has no issues with a region modded system because the game is loaded to the cart before you put it in the system.

not all region modded consoles are affected.

The GOY cart is uneffected because it uses a 5V Rom without mapper making it 100% complient with system specs
