FMV Games & CDRs
« on: March 06, 2014, 08:59:53 PM »
Yesterday I´ve been trying to get ICFTD to run for about 4 hours on one of my CDROM2 units. I didn´t play it though, I just wanted to have it run stable. What totally puzzled me was that it would load ANY commercial game fine as well as ANY CDR I burnt so far, but NOT ICFTD - it would even jump to the error screen on every try!

At first the startup video with the bearded guy would cut out almost immediately (after endless loading times), then it would run, but with sound completely distorted inbetween or as a whole. In the end it would play fine and reliable (very short loading time) until the first screen with the mountain hut, where I then would shut the unit off.

After that adjustment run it wouldn´t play ANY CDRs...so I started the whole setup procedure again until it would play CDRs, though with some audio cutouts or longer loading times (nearest-to-perfect that I could get).

What is your experience with this or similar FMV games, would they play fine once the drive is well adjusted?
Or do I have to expect often dropouts/no play at all?
What about CDRs - would they be read reliably as well?

Hey, thats not fair. You don´t know how many original games I own. And I certainly don´t pay 300+ for a CD game.

Apart from that I am using CDRs for english versions of games I already own in JP original.

Fascinatingly enough a scratched up copy of "It Came from the Desert" is probably responsible for taking my Duo's laser out of alignment. With that said, a quick search here will show you a lot of threads about CDRs and PC Engine compatibility.

I think you got me wrong - it´s not about CDRs ONLY. Since FMVs obviously afford a smaller/different error margin than CDRs I wanted to know if someone else experienced the same...it´s just an obversation I did and I was curious.

Thats all. Its certainly not about ripping games/saving money...

My copy of ICFTD is also scratched, but only slightly.

I've never had problems playing any pressed discs in my systems.

My first copy of Dragon Slayer was/is also pretty beat up. I eventually got a better pressed copy. That copy of It came from the desert after some cleaning, and some toothpaste resurfacing seems to play okay on my Turbo + CD and Laseractive. I haven't put it into either Duo again though.

If the data is properly laid out the only drive difference is less error/lag tolerance
A properly adjusted drive running cdr doesn't care about content type

If I understood you right it is mainly dependent on a correct efm adjustment? It was really really tough to set the drive up right without any dropouts in the fmv...like 1/10 mm on the pots...

Not sure efm?
Sounds like your laser power might be a bit off (high or low) making it error prone

According to your info I turned down laser power a bit (clockwise on the pot) to make it read better cdrs. Didnt have problems till I tried ICFTD...

ICFTD is dirt cheap. Don't waste your energy on burning it to CDR.  It's a hoot.

And speaking of which, don't waste your energy on playing Energy.

It isnt a 300+ title, I was referring to price rise in general.

My collection can bev seen via the link in my signature. It is 100% genuine.

Apart from that I like ICFTD BECAUSE of its trashy feel...thats what the game is famous for.
