Worst Deals!
« on: March 11, 2014, 09:46:43 AM »
For a contrast to the Best Deals thread we have going on.

For me, and I've been wanting to tell you about this a little more in depth for a while now - my worst deal was when I was 15 years old, and I was really into PCE import titles.  I didn't have a Hu-Card converter but I did have a nice pile of Super CD-Roms, and at the time I was also really into Ranma 1/2 (It's a little embarassing to say now, but I still kinda like it.)

So anyway, I had two buddies that new of this import store that was a pretty far drive from my house, and the store had a Shiny new Ranma game on SCD that I just had to have.  It's this one (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Ranma_3.htm).  These guys would have put Game Stop to shame with the trade in values they offered.  It cost $150 bucks (right there I should have known it was way overpriced) and of course I didn't just have that floating around at the time, so I decided to trade in a huge pile of my US Turbochips (and some CD games) to cover part of the cost.  The worst part is, it wasn't enough!  I still needed some cash (at least $50 bucks) to cover the rest.

Here's the bunch of (complete, of course, it was 1994) games I traded:

Bonk's Adventure / Revenge (My reasoning was sound, I had the 4-in-1 CD from the duo, still regret it though, Bonk's Revenge is one my favorite games ever and I wish I had the Hu still)
It Came From the Desert
Splatterhouse (had beaten it no less than 200 times, now I regret it)
Dragon's Curse (Deeeep regret, though beaten many times)
Cadash (More deep regret, beat it a bunch of times too, which is why I thought it was ok to let go)
Space Harrier (Love this game but not this port so no regrets!)
Ordyne
Fantasy Zone
I think Alien Crush (I thought I had kept this, one of my first games and I love pinball.. Kinda mad)
Dungeon Explorer

Maybe others, I can't recall them all.  But a really bad deal on my part as well as kinda shitty on the shop.  I want to get some of those titles again.  Thankfully I still have Blazing Lazers and Parasol Stars, which I was smart enough to to trade away.. and a Legendary Axe in iffy condition (I might have traded my original copy away) as well as an extra loose hu-card of it.  In fact, I do have a small pile of loose Hu-Cards I think I got from a friend but I'm missing some of my childhood (teenage) favorites.

Edit: I did love the Ranma game and still have it to this day, so it wasn't a total loss.  And now I have a pretty stringent policy on trading my games away no matter how bored I get of them.

Anybody else wanna lament a stupid decision or overpaid on a game?

Ouch! I also traded in copies of Bonk's Adventure and Bonk's Revenge (along with a copy of Sidearms I believe), all complete in cases, for a copy of a complete in case copy of Cadash a couple of years back or so. I had the same idea that neither copy of Bonk mattered because I had the 4-in-1 disk as well.  ](*,)

By far my worst deal, and perhaps my most single stupid video game purchase ever, was when I mis-read an eBay auction for a complete in box copy of Dragon Spirit. Turns out it was just the box (no card, case, or styrofoam), in rather poor condition, and I spent 25 bucks!

It was one of earliest TG-16 purchases (I didn't really start seriously collecting for Turbografx until 2008 or so), so I had absolutely zero sense of the market value for most games. I thought the seller was trying to rip me, but I somehow managed to mis-read the auction, and, for some stupid reason, I didn't bother re-reading the description before I clicked buy-it-now. I always want to slap myself every time I look at that stupid Dragon Spirit box!!

Sometimes seller´s description are misleading, trying to trick you into thinking you are actually bidding on everything pictured (showing CIB), and then stating it is without the game. Quite unfair, I´d say. No reason to for anyone to slap yourself, you´re certainly not the only one

Yeah, I mean I still have the 4-in-1 disc (you'd have to pry Gate of Thunder out of my cold dead hands) and I even have somehow acquired a loosie of Bonk's Adventure, but one day I'd like to get them complete again as Hu-Cards.  No plans for Bonk 3 since it's so expensive.

I also had Sidearms and I traded it in that deal!  I forgot about it though because I kinda hated it at the time.  I think I might have had vigilante too, which my mind blocked out because that was probably my least favorite ever.

Maaan. That must have been disappointing.  Did you ever get Dragon Spirit for real?

I picked up a complete in case copy not too long afterward  :D But I still definitely overpaid for my now CIB copy of Dragon Spirit haha. It's definitely not my favorite shooter on the system, but I still really enjoy it.
