WTB: Neo-Geo CD console
« on: March 28, 2014, 06:00:08 AM »
It hasn't been long since I first heard about this thing (thought it was a CD add on for the Neo Geo for the longest time) but the more I pour over the listings, the more I want one. I've found some on eBay, but the shipping on them is rediculous.

So, I thought I'd turn here and see if any in this friendly community would be willing to sell theirs. If you know of a better place to find them, I'd be open to that too.

I've gone through about 3 of these.  Two top loaders and a CDZ.  Look for a CDZ if you can as the top loader, while extremely reliable, has God awful loads.  That said they are quite cheap.  don't pay too much people are hiking the prices on them and they are totally not worth it.  The eBay guys asking  $80 just for shipping for these are obviously full of it.  You should be able to get a top loader and a stack of commons for $100.

Get a CDZ, much faster loading than the CD.

My CDZ drive failed after a few months, but a replacement CDZ drive was easy to find. My replacement drive has served me well for a long time.

Also, fighting games are really cheap on the CD, because nobody likes the load times. However, you will grow patient with the loads, especially on a CDZ. Don't be hesitant to buy any!

A lot of the earlier Neo Geo MVS games are pricey on the CD, since they were outdated for years.

I mean you won't really spend that much on CD's, the most expensive being $100 or so.  Plus you can just burn them or even play them on a Dreamcast.  To be perfectly honest just get a Dreamcast, it'll play Neo CD games with the proper boot disc and the loads are obviously WAY WAY WAY faster.

Huh, really? I have a Dreamcast. I'll have to try that out. I don't suppose you can reveal that boot disc here...

No snark intended. I just never get to post one of those.  :)

BTW, this is news to me as well!  I've had my Dreamcast hooked up for awhile, but sadly it hasn't gotten much use lately.  This'll change that!

Well, I did Google it, and all I can find are ones that can play burned ISOs, but none that actually play the real discs. Is there one I'm stupidly missing perchance?

I had no idea the Dreamcast could play Neo Geo CD. Good to know. Some of the prices for Neo Geo CD systems are crazy

YEah well the Dreamcast pads are TERRIBLE for fighters.  You really need to get arcade sticks.  But yeah the Dreamcast will simply play the games and load like a maniac.

I'm too impatient I can't handle the Neo CD loading times, even the CDZ is too much waiting for me.
If AES is too expensive for you then MVS is the best way to go.

I, on the other hand, am very patient. For some reason, loading times just don't phase me that much. I do have my limits... ahem, Sonic '06, but from what I've observed from YouTube and such, I feel like they wouldn't be as big a dealbreaker for me.

I did find a pretty decent bundle for a top-loader with all the cables, 1 (or 2?) controllers, and a randomly chosen game for $165 on Amazon. (with reasonable shipping prices, thank God) Which I might jump on, since it seems like the best deal I'm going to get.

If you do get a CDZ, make sure to drill holes in the back. Bad design led to overheating.
